We have just returned from a very enjoyable two night stay at the Kings Head Inn. Steve and Lisa, the owners, are very friendly and helpful and have done an amazing job with this old inn - it's a very comfortable, beautifully decorated and furnished hotel with a light, airy, contemporary feel. We stayed in the Beach Room, which, although one of the smaller rooms, had everything we needed. The menu is not complicated and provides good, well cooked simple food. The staff were pleasant and welcoming and everyone had a smile! We will definitely go back again and will recommend it to friends.

The "Top o' the Hill" had been in decline for many years before it finally closed. New owners have now taken it over and have spent a very considerable time (and not inconsiderable sums of money it appears) completely gutting and refurbishing the old building before re-opening a couple of weeks ago as the Kings Head.

If you come from afar then be careful not to confuse this with another also named the Kings Head, located about 5 miles away in Udimore.

This pub is the first you come across if you come out of Rye via Rye Hill on the A268 towards Peasmarsh. It is within walking distance of the town, but you'll need to be pretty fit and you'll have earned a drink by the time you arrive - however there is also a generous amount of car parking available.

Living locally, we called a couple of weeks after the reopening for a quick lunch. We received a warm and friendly reception, and a table in the window was offered. The lunch menu, and specials board, provided sufficient choice, with most main courses around the £10 - £12 mark. Desserts were on offer at just under £6. We opted for Roast Beef with all the trimmings and a couple of glasses of red to wash it down. The bar area has been total stripped and a new bar (which reminded me a little of a light oak coffin!) has been installed with tables around the perimeter. I get nervous of pubs with bare floorboards and hard furnishings as they can be noisy, but this wasn't a problem at a quiet lunchtime.

Whilst waiting for our meals - they are freshly prepared to order - we expressed interest in the rooms available as we often have visiting friends and relatives who need somewhere to stay. Again a very friendly offer to visit the rooms if we wished - needless to say we accepted this and had a good look around those rooms which were unoccupied at the time. All were of a very high standard, spacious and very clean with white freshly painted walls and new carpets with period fittings. We were suitably impressed. I do like white walls in rooms as it reveals everything - and requires regular maintenance to keep it fresh and clean!

The meal was excellent. Two thick slices of roast beef served with roast potatoes and Yorkshire on a large rectangular plate. A separate dish of cauliflower, carrots and beans was also provided and all were piping hot. There was no gravy boat, but I am sure that this and horseradish sauce would have been provided if we had asked - and we were asked a number of times if we were happy with everything (which we were!). The neighbouring table had opted for home made burgers and chips and these arrived on an impressive looking wooden platter - the burger itself was an inch thick and appeared to have a problem in staying in the roll in which it was served......

Cost for two roast beefs and two 175ml glasses of red came to £26.50. Upper end of the price band for a similar meal locally but good quality and thoroughly enjoyable. Will be interested to see how this establishment beds down over time - it looks promising.

Room Tip: The A268 is not usually a busy A Road, and the location is generally very quiet.

First I must say please ignore any reviews that have been given in 2012. The Kings Head inn is now under new owners. Well..... Were do I start! We ate here on Saturday night with friends, only roughly one week after The Kings head had re opened. So pleased we booked a table the place was buzzing! I just couldn't believe the transformation the new owners have done. It has such a lovely feel, great atmosphere. The interior is sharp yet hasn't lost the country feel. Cosy fire smouldering in the bar area with a sofa to sink into. We all had a fantastic meal. All very reasonably priced. Sample menu And special board both had a variety for all. As a vegetarian I had the best Risotto ever! Compliments to the chef! Oh and the honey comb ice cream......... I just can't wait to go back! They had people staying and we heard them saying how fantastic the rooms are! Even as a local I think I would like to have a night away! The staff where efficient, polite, and nothing to much trouble. Considering they haven't been open long and every table was taken, I felt they all coped well! We highly recommend The Kings Head Inn! Well done Lisa, Steve and your hard working team.

The last time I visited this pub, it was looking very tired and worn out!! The transformation is a-maz-ing!! The pub is light, airy and buzzing with expectations - and the food does not disappoint!! The Baked Camembert is as good as we have eaten abroad - the Mixed Meats with Bubble & Squeak and chips - wonderful - the Pie of the Day - Steak & Ale - PROPER PIE SLICE!! Wonderful, wonderful - Lucy the waitress, attentive but not in your face and the bottle of water with your meal is a very nice touch - very oh la la!! Lisa and Steve - carry on as you are and you will definitely see us again!!

It's usually hard to find accommodation in Rye at the weekend especially when we had such a gloriously sunny one last weekend, but due to the secret, for now, that is the Kings Head it's quite easy. Not only that but because it's brand spanking newly renovated, the rooms and bar/restaurant are immaculate with all of the staff bending over backwards to make sure that everyone is happy. In fact my only criticism is that they can be a bit too attentive and need to chill a bit. Having said that, the rooms are beautiful, very comfortable and the food is excellent and very reasonably priced, £10 for a rib-eye steak? It's a bit of a hike up and down the hill into town but when you need the excercise like I do, it's an added bonus. We plan to return but suspect that when the word gets out how good this place has become, we'll be lucky to find room at the inn. Keep up the good work!

Firstly the hosts Lisa and Steve are welcoming and pleasantly efficient. ----their experience in the pub and hotel trade is clearly evident. The spacious rooms are individually styled and tastefully furnished to a very high spec. The beds are large and comfy. The bar is light and airy with a cosy feel----lovely log fire---and completely new furnishings.-------the Kings. Head Inn has a real de-luxe feel ----everything you need for an excellent holiday break or an evening out.
