“New Years Eve Dinner”

Rye is a beautiful town on the south coast of England in East Sussex and the George fits in very well to this great town. Staff were friendly and professional and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Rye.

Dear Fellow Tripadvisor,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Thank you so much for taking a moment to comment on your experience at the New Year’s Even 1950’s Rock ‘ Roll boogie woogie party at The George In Rye! A splendid evening had by all and the Chapel Down bubbly was flowing right on into the early hours. We are a huge fan of Jerry Lee Lewis here and his great balls of fire, here, down south!! And The George In Rye continues to be one of best picks to stay in Rye as well as, I think, top night spot on Saturday night with the George Cocktails shakin’ and the Gambas swimmin’!!
This week we are brainstorming on events for 2014 so watch this space or let us know if you have any ideas ! hopefully see you on the dance floor next year!

4 visits for dinner over the Christmas period, with every meal fantastic. Very much a French Bistro type atmosphere, with most of the staff also being French. The service was great, yet the 'Grill' restaurant room can get a little hot. The George is a busy place and rightly so, the food was outstandingly good.

Lovely welcoming hotel with friendly staff. We started with a standard double room which we thought was quite small (rate usually £135) so we asked to upgrade, and moved to a luxury double which was incredibly spacious. The room was tucked away at the back of the property (room 46) which meant you had to walk through their courtyard garden to get it - bit of a pain in the rain but they do provide umbrellas in the room. The room itself was lovely, with antique furniture; we'd echo another reviewer's comments about socket location which could be improved. The bathroom was large with a powerful walk in shower as well as a free-standing bath. On entering the room there was a definite odour...not quite cleaning products, more like air freshener trying to hide another odour, which was not that pleasant but we got used to. We had dinner in the restaurant, which was fantastic, really good food and great service. The only downside was that the lovely log fire started to smoke. No-one really seemed to do anything about it - almost like it happens all the time. Luckily we had finished eating at this point and so we moved to the bar to finish our drinks. Around us though the diners' eyes were watering and other people also asked to move. Still no-one did anything to the fire, it just carried on smoking!
And so to bed...the bed was by and large very comfortable. It had some sort of mattress topper on it which wasn't attached / tucked into the mattress in any way. The result - rumbled sheets and topper and an uncomfortable nights sleep, added to by the fact that the two pillows provided were insubstantial; we ended up adding the decorative cushions to the pile. A shame, since it was otherwise a really lovely stay. Breakfast was again in the restaurant, a substantial buffet but you could also order your eggs from the waiter.
Lovely hotel, attractive spacious room, welcoming friendly staff. Just let down by a few minor things.

Stayed for one night on 30th Dec on a DB & B basis.
Room 10 was charming, a lovely, cosy bolt hole from the foul weather, with a massive roll top bath, just as described.
I was hesitant about booking dinner at the grill because of the highly mixed reviews on this site, but decided to do it.
A very wise decision. I'm sure that previous reviewers can't all have been wrong about iffy service and excessive waiting time between courses etc. so I can only assume that the management team took these comments seriously.
I eat out a lot, and I have to say that overall, this was probably the best dinner I had in 2013. The duck terrine, rump of lamb and bread and butter pudding were no less than perfectly cooked and presented. The wine was excellent and not grossly overpriced.
The service was absolutely spot on from start to finish. Attentive but not claustrophobic, friendly but professional. Choice of waters offered and served immediately, wines equally so. The courses were served with perfect timing.
Dear George Hotel, you absolutely nailed it for me.
Without doubt I will return, and have already recommended you to friends and colleagues.
If you have a mailing list, please add my name to it. 10 out of 10 from me.

We stayed for 2 nights before visiting relatives for Christmas. The weather was awful which did not help and we were under the roof in room 17 and it was blowing galeforce winds. The room was cold and the blankets were more suited to Summer - a second blanket did not help. Room big and clean- couch dirty. The restaurant experience was very poor on night one but cost just under £100 for 2 courses and 2 drinks each. The food was average. Breakfast was a much better experience- excellent granola, croissant and coffee. The young staff are not trained in the restaurant and the manager has an arrogance (french arrogance which is fine when the service and food is good) which I suspect is the core problem. Bar staff again need training. Reception very friendly and a great welcome. Residents lounge area too small - a foyer really so in bad weather you are confined to your room or the bar. Would I stay there again? No. Almost £500 for 2 night and 1 dinner...too expensive. Dined at Webbe's [I think that is the name] - restaurant and cookery school night 2- it was excellent.

Room Tip: more suited to a summer stay

My friends and I stayed at The George for NYE 2013. The hotel was lovely and I feel the website does not do it justice. It was beautifully decorated throughout including the Christmas spray. We stayed in two Queen rooms opposite each other which were great. The rooms had good facilities & the staff would bring you fresh milk for your hot drinks.
The rooms could do with better sited plug sockets, it was a stretch to plug the kettle in from the table.
Food was also excellent, we will definitely be staying there again. Unfortunately there is no car park attached to the hotel so we did have to walk a bit in the pouring rain but this did not dampen our stay.

The hotel room was average for a four star hotel, rooms are in need of new decor, worn carpets and bathroom extinguisher wasn't working. They also need to get new beds as I got terrible back pain after two days. We also noticed the cleaners hadn't replaced towels daily. The hotel needs to pay better attention to details, it doesn't deserve a four star right now.
