After a shambolic stay over Christmas we were invited back to the George for one night stay with our two teenage girls. A very big difference I must say. Staff were very friendly and very helpful. No slippers in the room which was a disapointment but apart from that everything was very good.

One night stay on business. Very friendly and helpful staff (free 1/2 pint to try a beer didn't go amiss!) Excellent slightly quirky room (loved it) with radiator and windows that open of course, way better than aircon. An absolutely superb dinner in a delightful classic old Kent room. Good breakfast, with more clean crisp fresh air! What more do you need? Rye is great and a lot to do around the area with the unique ecology and landscape of the Dungeness peninsula.

We always try and choose somewhere with lots of style and character for our anniversary weekends away and The George at Rye certainly lived up to expectations. The old coaching inn oozed personality and charm and the quirky, individual way in which it had been decorated complemented the historic backcloth perfectly. I loved all the thoughtful and often fun design features which made the hotel one of a kind.
Our room was a superior, booked online for a special rate back in January. At first, I was disappointed by its size. It was up in the roof so felt like an attic room but when I found that there were no alternatives available, I acclimatised to the size. I really liked the privacy the location afforded and loved looking out over the roof tops and watching the antics of the seagulls. The room itself was very comfortable, if a little bit warm at times. The roll top bath was an indulgent extra, great with lots of bubbles and a glass of wine! (The bathroom was almost bigger than the bedroom!)
We ate in the restaurant the first night and were delighted with our starter of scallops. Beautifully fresh and a wonderful combination of flavours. The mains were fine but less remarkable. There was an excellent choice of foods for breakfast and we ate very well!
Service throughout our stay was really friendly, especially the ladies on reception who couldn't do enough for us. A big thank you to them.
I agree with previous comments about how busy the hotel can get. There were a few events the weekend we stayed which helped to fill up the hotel. But there are quite a few different rooms in which to relax, including an attractive outside courtyard, so finding a seat isn't a big problem.
Also, as others have stated, it's not a modern hotel with air-conditioning throughout and lifts so don't come expecting these features. Do get help with your luggage; the stairs are steeper than you might think!
And allow plenty of time for unloading and reloading the car. The car parks are plentiful and not expensive but finding a spot outside the hotel at peak times can be tricky.
All in all, a hotel full of charm that we'd be happy to return to.

Room Tip: Take time choosing a room that will suit you. I should imagine some rooms are a lot noisier than oth...

We stayed in Rye on the way to France and we were very pleased to be able to stay at The George. In such a pretty town on a pretty street, the hotel is lovely. The staff are very welcoming and the room, although a little squishy when the sofa is pulled out for a bed, is beautifully decorated - a real joy to be in - and nice touches like a good brand of tea and toileteries and free sparkling water.

The pub section was fabulous for a pre dinner wine and family game of Uno. The outdoor area is fab for when the kids start to get a little noisy. Dinner, although a little expensive, was excellent - best oysters I've had in ages. Breakfast was also yummy - a bit special to have a continental and cooked breaky - yum.

Only thing I was sad about was not buying some of the branded tea cups!

We stayed in one of the junior suites (no. 32) for one night. The room was very spacious and tastefully decorated with a luxurious bathroom. We enjoyed a great dinner where all three courses were of a very high standard and service was friendly, slick and attentive. Even though we had a large dinner, we ended up having a big breakfast too due to an overwhelmingly large choice of great options including fresh croissants, poached pears, cereals plus a cooked breakfast to follow. Although parking outside the hotel is tricky due to limited spaces, the car park is just a short walk away so didn't cause any major problems plus we were able to load up by the side entrance.
Overall, a great find and we will certainly be returning.

We attended a wedding at the George and also stayed here. Very impressed throughout by the hotel, the room and the service we received.

Reception were extremely friendly and accommodating re various requests eg printing out a speech for the wedding! The room was lovely, nicely decorated, extremely clean. The food was great - room service lunch, dinner at the wedding and breakfast the following morning.

The bar staff were very friendly. Lovely communal spaces with a nice bar area and separate small lounge with fire place.

It is a boutique hotel and the building is quite 'quirky' - this is evident in the rooms, the size, shapes and styles of the rooms are all different with their own individual character. We stayed in room 4 - it was very compact (this was one of the lowest priced 'queen' options). The bed was quite soft. A friend was in room 9 - this was more spacious. It was a very hot day and the rooms did seem a little stuffy at times. The ballroom for the wedding was beautifully air-conditioned!

Room Tip: It is a boutique hotel and the building is quite 'quirky' - this is evident in the rooms, th...

Dear 'WalkerSLJ'
We're so glad you enjoyed the wedding, the food and good service from all our staff. The Hotel is an old coaching inn and dates back from 1575 so the rooms are all of different shapes and sizes. We hope that you'll come back and spend time with us again!

We'd decided to make the most of another sunny day and drive down to Rye. On impulse we decided to stay overnight, and I called The George and was told there were only superior rooms and suites available at a minimum cost of £175 (inc breakfast). I checked online, where the cheapest room available was a "queen" at £135 inclusive so I booked it. On arrival, we were offered two rooms, both charming: one in the roof and the other on the first floor facing onto Lion Street. We chose the second which had a large bathroom with roll top bath and a separate shower cubicle, perfect for us both as I don't like baths. In the evening, we ate in the restaurant which was moderately busy, mainly with an elderly clientele. My crab starter was fresh, attractively presented and delicious. My partner's squid was fried, also very fresh and very good. We both had seafood: lemon sole and lobster. The fish came with roasted new potatoes (which aren't suited to roasting) and the lobster with chips which were soggy. We shared a soufflé which had curdled, for which we were not charged, nor was one of the glasses of Sauternes that we'd chosen to have with it. Next morning, the Full English Breakfast was very good: our fried and poached eggs were cooked perfectly (sounds easy but isn't). The coffee served in a cafetiere was weak and awful so we asked for cappuccinos and lattes arrived but the milk was burnt so we left them. The service throughout our short stay was charming, like the hotel, and helpful. England needs more hotels like The George.

Room Tip: Room 6 faces onto Lion Street which can be noisy when loading/unloading takes place during the night...
