You can keep your spa hotels! - our stay was wonderful - this place is oooozing history and the staff are all so attentive and knowledgeable and eager to answer questions. We met some lovely guests and can't wait to stay again :) No ghosts experienced, just a really good night's sleep :) I especially liked the attentive porters and the guest parking which made the whole experience stress free!

We just got married and stayed at The Mermaid, what can I say? they were fantastic.
The staff all extremely professional and polite (they meant it) they were not the polite for politeness sake staff that we have encountered at other hotels.
Food absolutely fantastic. You really must try the Eggs Benedict.
Cannot rate them highly enough, nothing was too much trouble.
We will definitely be going back there for our first wedding anniversary.

I get fed up with mealy mouthed people moaning about prices in Rye. Rye is expensive because so many people want to visit. A single room with four poster bed and fully equipped bathroom for £100 a night, including full English breakfast, in a centuries old building exuding charm at every turn is good value. Staff are all charming and the smile from the young lady at breakfast was priceless. I shall return.

My other half went to a model show, he makes minature armoured vehicles, and as my treat for supporting him, we returned to the Mermaid Inn at Rye.
The buildings are wonderful, a patchwork of corridors, wooden panels and wall paintings. The bed room was wonderful, but had we been tall we would have knocked our heads a lot!
The fire escape would have involved climbing out of a window, but this was quaint!
A down side was the shower...it was impossible to stand in the space available... But we managed to wash....another gripe was bad lighting in the bathroom ...I need good lighting to apply my make up. The meal was good, but we had a similar standard at a local pub recently at a lot less!

stayed for a night at the Mermaid and what a lovely stay it was, the building oozes charm and character. The staff were more than helpful and nothing seemed to be to much! Breakfast was lovely. The surrounding town blows you away when you start to venture out and popping down the alleyways and twit terns imagining the smugglers and the going on's in time gone by! absolutely love this place and will be staying again,

We had booked this holiday several months ago, as the wife has a fascination with all things supernatural, and the Mermaid appeared very much to fit the bill from that angle, sceptical although I may be. Finding the place not over easy if you are arriving by car - the front entrance is up a charming but steep cobbled street with a very sharp left required to gain access - you are probably better served by gaining access via the small rear entrance just off the High Street directly opposite the Bell pub, but be warned that the car park is very small. Extra parking can be found down by the Strand Quay, at semi-reasonable prices. The rooms are full of character and somewhat quirky, as one might expect from a building of this age. Our double room, The Fleur de Lys Chamber (Room 10) overlooked both the car park and the bar, and contained a huge four poster bed which was so high above ground level that we virtually had to jump to get in and out of it! Comfortable in the extreme, however. The bath/toilet was small, so small that the wash basin was actually situated in the main room, but no matter. There was no free-standing wardrobe, rather a door constructed to enclose a small triangular area, but again not a problem. The bar, on the ground floor and boasting its enormous fireplace, was beautifully warm with the rarity of a real log fire and a well-stocked bar. It was extremely popular both with residents and non-residents - possibly because so many bars in Rye seem to have recently shut, and getting a seat was not always possible. This problem is allayed for residents, who can instead decamp to one of the two excellent private lounges in the close vicinity of the bar. Bar service was highly efficient for the most part, despite one small hiccough on our second evening, for which effusive apologies were received. We elected to try the dinner menu on our first night and enjoyed a splendid culinary experience, albeit to the upper end of the price range, with attentive service throughout in the ancient dining room, bedecked with ornaments from bygone ages. Breakfast, also served in the dining room, was more than adequate each day. The town of Rye had been recommended to us by several friends, and with good reason - it has an olde worlde charm about it - plenty of antique and novelty shops where those so disposed could linger for hours. Sadly, several shops along the high street appear to have fallen victim to the recession - hopefully trade will pick up again soon. The towns of Battle and Hastings are close by, for those intrigued by the Norman Conquest, and there are several well-appointed restaurants in the vicinity of the Strand Quay. My wife was highly disappointed to have encountered no ghosts during our stay, but we shall be returning for one of the Rye Heritage's Ghost walks in October, and look forward to staying again in an excellent and friendly hotel.

We stayed for one night at the Mermaid and cannot rate the place highly enough. If you love character and history, this place has it in abundance. It has a lovely quirky feel too with a crooked house appeal as you move through the maze of decorated corridors. The staff were friendly and accommodating and happy to help with anything we needed. The bar had a lovely feel with a wonderful warm fireplace, perfect for the cold winter evenings. Breakfast was great too with again great service. Thank you to the staff team for a fantastic stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in a 4 poster room which was full of character.
