Owner description: The perfect start to your visit to Rye! The Rye Heritage Centre is the home of the 'Story of Rye' Town Model Sound and Light show, a handmade scale model of Victorian Rye that plays a show that takes you through 700 years of Rye's history. Historic Audio Walking Tours are available for hire, with guided ghost tours available on selected dates during the winter months. A marvellously detailed model of the old Rye town, built by a husband and wife couple years ago over 4 years, used as their business for years before finally being sold to Rye Council. Three of us went late in the afternoon and had the small hall to ourselves, which was great. Overhead lights, plus other lights within the model buildings plus side lighting was all used to good effect with a commentary and slide show that gave a great history of this fascinating town. As you get close to the centre, the road and pavement signs seem to vanish, but persevere - it is well worth a visit. There are great cafes nearby after your visit as well to asssuage the thirst and hunger of the avid visitor.

We visited the Rye Heritage Centre at the start of our weekend in Rye. There is a brilliant model of the town, which you can have a look at, then listen to a commentary which gives loads of interesting history, and the model lights up to show the areas where events took place. Upstairs there is a collection of old fashioned end-of-pier machines, 'what the butler saw' and similar, some dating from the early 20th century. Really interesting and entertaining. But possibly the best thing about the centre was the staff. They were so knowledgeable about the town, and very helpful. We expressed an interest in the ghost walk, but were told it was fully booked. Later on, there were cancellations, and the Heritage Centre staff managed to track us down via our B&B (we had mentioned where we were staying) and we got a phone call letting us know of the two spare spaces! Excellent customer service. We really enjoyed the ghost walk too-quite spooky! And it was great to get to visit the 1249 tower in the dark...

This is the 3rd time I have visited the Model Village light and sound show. 20 odd years ago when my children were little, a few years later with some relatives from the US and just now with my Wife. Everyone has always loved it. It is a great way to learn the History of Rye for all ages and to orienteer yourself for walking round afterwards. The staff are helpful and friendly and there is also the "old" penny arcade upstairs which may take some of you back in time. There is of course the gift shop if you are into that but it is the "model village" story that gives you a condensed, interesting and informative lesson on this special little town, Rye.
