“If your visiting ..it's worth the visit”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

This is well worth a visit if you are a tourist...the oldest coaching inn in the lovely town of Rye..on Mermaid Street.Best to park elsewhere as the car park is small. Its not however an easy walk for older people or pushchairs as its a cobbled street.Be aware the drinks are expensive! But if your looking for old world, history etc this can't be beaten....

“Incredible old building and an excellent pub”
Reviewed 20 July 2013

I haven't seen many (any?) pubs this old that are this beautiful and this well preserved. Great atmosphere, cozy if you're seeking refuge in winter, but also pleasant in the summer with outside seating in the sun. And of course the fireplace is magnificent!

“Incredible”
Reviewed 2 July 2013

We only had time for a drink but it gave us a chance to visit one of the most interesting places in the area.To try and picture what it would have been like when used for smuggling was fascinating. The structure of the building was amazing and beautifully preserved. It was just full of atmosphere I could have sat there for hours just soaking it up.Hope one day to return and treat myself to a long weekend there .The menu looked really well thought out and afternoon tea looked heavenly.....

“they keep a nice pint of ale”
Reviewed 18 June 2013

i went to the mermaid on the 26th may 2013 [the whitsun bank holiday weekend] to watch the morris dancing which took place in the car park. the mermaid keeps a good pint of ale - having had two pints of the darkstar hophead. Found the staff to be helpful and polite. keep up the good work with ales. i didnt stay the night, i only stayed for a couple of pints whilst watching the morris dancing - i wish id stayed for lunch now.

“A step back in time”
Reviewed 16 February 2013

The bar at the Mermaid Hotel in Rye is a real treat in winter. It has the biggest fireplace we've ever seen stacked which huge logs and giving out plenty of warmth. Sitting there looking at the ancient walls and wooden beams makes you think it probably hasn't changed at all since 1420. Great atmosphere.

There's a small bar menu and sandwiches as well. Food is well presented and good though it can be quite awkward trying to eat a hot meal on the tiny, low tables. Something a bit sturdier and taller would make it a perfect venue on a cold winter's day. They do a decent pint of Harveys and the wine is good but expensive. This is more of a "treat" place as a bar snack can cost as much as lunch in a restaurant.
