The BBC were busy in Rye this summer (May to July 2014) filming E.F.Benson's 1930s best-selling comic novels "Mapp & Lucia" set in the imaginery town of Tilling (just like Rye). Indeed they filmed in Lamb House (Mallards in the books) where Benson wrote the novels and set key scenes. Little had to be changed for much of the filming, though Market Street's tarmac got covered with stones and mud and a few houses were restored to the shops they once were. Expected to be shown Xmas 2014, Miranda Richardson and Anna Chancellor are among the stars - but so is Rye. The cobbled streets, and historic houses, in the citadel, topped with the Norman St Mary's church, were perfect for filming and sightseeing ; and indeed many visitors climb the tower every day to see the sights of the rolling Weald on one side and on the other Romney Marsh sweeping to the horizon. So watch "Mapp and Lucia" on the BBC and then come and see Rye for yourself
