“Back after refurbishment................”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

................but little change here, really. We arrived, as always, at midday and this was last Thursday on a lovely sunny day. We noticed plenty of seating and that changes had been made to the interior, regarding furnishings and some structural additions. We perused the menu which we know well anyway from visiting Vintage Inn back home in Kent.
We are rather fussy and would rather have cold fishy starter-like dishes but the menu was lacking. We also like our hot food to be hot and served on hot plates but this never happens at Vintage Inns, despited my complaints to head office.
We therefore tend to select the Fish Pie which at least at some stage goes under a grill to finish it off after its journey from the deep freeze. Unfortunately James Martin has now appended his name to the dish and modified it from its previous incarnation that was available last year or at least until the recent new menus were issued.
To our mind it has been downgraded, somewhat with respect to Fish content and an excess of crushed baby potatoes and it costs more to boot. And why aren't the Peas every hot or at least warm??
We did not experience any initial problems with service as we very rarely do visiting early at lunchtime. However, by the time we left after 90 minutes or so, the place was filling up and would therefore expect delays then for the new 'late' arrivals. We had to wait a bit longer for our desserts which were only an ice cream and frozen honey yogurt.
From our point of view and being people who don't like to eat late I think that we gain from better service almost everywhere we go. If people want to arrive late and in large-ish groups then a wait is inevitable.
We wish that Vintage Inns would discuss with Mr Martin about the quality of his Fish Pie, to which he has given his name.
In general it is the menus and the quality of food and its preparation and presention that lets Vintage Inns down, everywhere, not to mention the often terrible background music. (Not at the Golden Galleon however).

“Not allowed to sit outside after 6pm!!”
Reviewed 3 July 2014 via mobile

The warmest, calmest evening of the summer so far, where better to sit outside and eat in the evening, the Golden Galleon(or cuckmere inn as its now known).
We found a nicely situated table in the garden, it's about 7.15, ordered drinks at the bar, took them out and looked at our menus. Went back to the bar to order and on giving our table number, we are told that they finished serving outside from 6pm due to to staff shortages.
So we have driven 15 miles to eat in the garden here, there is no sign outside to say that meals have finished being served ( obviously, as no one would drive in!)
The manager was very firm on this rule and not interested in customer satisfaction. We should have finished our drinks and left, but stupidly decided to stay. The room we were put in was airless, with only one tiny window that can be opened. The new lighting was so hot on your head that you will probably get sunburnt.
The food was average. A jug of water we ordered never arrived, so that meant another queue at the bar. At 7.57pm, nearly 2 hours after outside serving has apparently finished, a table is served with some food. So on paying my bill I raised this with the manager, who said it was pudding and ordered much earlier. The person eating it used a knife and fork to eat it, Hmmmmm??
On paying I asked politely if there would be any compensation for a ruined evening and was told, No, just pay and leave please.

I'm keeping to independent pubs in this area in the future

“Change of name but still the same poor service and food”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Along with my wife, niece, mother and a friend of hers we met here for an early evening drink and bite to eat to celebrate my mothers birthday. On arrival the service at the bar was quick but on buying further drinks it took more than 10 minutes to get served. There was only one person behind the bar and there had been an influx of customers, but there appeared to be no back up to ease the pressure.

The menu was not that appealing and we decided to just have a starter. Three of the items ordered took a good half an hour to arrive and then by waitress whose manner was sourer than a bag of lemon! The fourth order arrived, after a visit to the bar questioning where it was, over 10 minutes later. The chiips ordered were good but the other dishes were well below expectations and the soup bowl was only half full.

I suspect the staff are paid ridiculously low wages and are not at all mootivated. It's that or 'pay peanuts, get monkeys'. A place to avoid and we will not be going back in a hurry!

“Filthy outside and bad attitude.”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Used to know this as Golden Galleon.Vintage inns do not research their history it was known as that because of the Smuggling which took place in the area.It was an iconic well run pub but no more!Visited on sunny summers evening last week. The outside was filthy cigarette butsbetc under table and uncleared dishes glass tables looked as though they had not been wiped for weeks!Oh well we thought we're here now got a drink and chose from uninspiring menu only to be told therewas no service outside after a certain hour! The attitude gave the impression that they really didn't want us to eat outside.....on a lovely summers evening.Gave up.Sent a customer complaint to Vintage Inns but it seems they don't respond to negative reports!! Soooo disappointed.

“Great location, but that's all.”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

We knew this as the Golden Galleon which used to be quite a smart, well run place and we would eat here occasionally until we felt that it had started to go downhill.
On passing today we noticed that it had been renamed The Cuckmere Inn and were curious to see whether any other changes had taken place so we called in for drink and a snack.
Sadly the deterioration seems to have continued, where once we enjoyed good food in pleasant surroundings served by polite, well turned out and engaged people we endured sub-standard food delivered by unhappy looking, seemingly un-coordinated staff whose appearance was bordering on slovenly.
So, what went wrong?
We ordered a dish of olives to eat whilst we browsed the menu. The olives arrived without any cocktail sticks or anything else with which to eat them.
Half an hour later our main food order hadn't arrived. This was a quiet mid-afternoon with at least three people serving.
After asking if there was a problem the food suddenly appeared but was lukewarm suggesting that it had been sitting in the kitchen for some time looking for a home.
There were no napkins on the table and we had to ask for them.
Sure, Cuckmere Haven remains a stunning location but the Inn itself is looking tired and in need of some serious TLC.
I doubt we'll be back.
