Food is ok. Beer is ok. Ambience is more of a managed pub rather than a landlord held pub where it's realised that the welcome can have a big effect on the customer.

Missed opportunity? Yes. It's a baeutiful pub, centrally placed, and very historic. It could really be a far more locals' local as well as catering for the casualy diner.

I used The Old Plough frequently, but only the bar, and it was apparent that it was a popular eating place, so when I was invited to join some friends for dinner I had no hesitation in accepting. What a disappointment, the food had no taste and I had the impression that it was all precooked. But,... it was priced accordingly and looked attractive on the plate, hence the popularity. The manager was not as sociable as the bar staff.

Had yet another visit and was not disappointed by the meal which was good value. Looking at some reports not sure what is expected as for the price the food is always good. In the summer there is a great sun trap of a garden which is not available elsewhere in the town centre. If looking for good selection of draught beer and good range of affordable food I would recommend a visit.

It's cheap but steak was not edible - more like a lump of cardboard. Manager was abrupt & rude. But bar staff were lovely.

Went as part of a group. Can't comment on the standard of the other meals but they didn't look great. Our meals were pre ordered and my husband and I had asked for the pie and mash but had asked for chips instead of mash. When the meals came we had been given mash which was instant - disgusting. The pie had obviously been reheated as the pastry was hard and the filling had dried out. The meat was gristly. The nicest thing on that plate were the peas. Won't be going back. Oh and the people serving the food had faces like slapped backsides. The bar staff were pleasant though.
