“Average hotel, appalling breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2014

The hotel was unremarkable in all respects. Except its breakfast which ranks at the bottom of the many hotel buffet breakfasts I have experienced over decades of travel. The coffee, in every form offered, was undrinkable, the sausage so over cooked it was all but impossible to cut or enter. the fruit old and close to off.

We stayed here using reward points. It was the closest hotel to a function we were going to, so a bit of a no-brainer really.
The room was clean and modern, easy on the eye and fairly comfortable. The double bed was a bit small and bouncy, but the sleep quality was no better or worse than way more expensive places.
The "Express" branding marks it as a cut down Holiday Inn, but in reality for normal travellers the only difference is the breakfast. Pro: it's free. Con: it's not a full Holiday Inn breakfast... No bacon, no hash browns, no fried eggs....
In the event we skipped the breakfast in favour of an early getaway so I can't comment on how good the baked beans were, not that I would have eaten them anyway...
The location is, er, interesting. A bit on the beaten track, being as it is on the A12. A negative is that taxis are quite expensive to and from the hotel. But that's not the hotel's fault.
In summary, this place was fine. Friendly staff, clean hotel, and the bar was open till very late... can't do much better than that.
I would recommend it to anyone who had cause to be in this part of the world.

Room Tip: Actually, I think the rooms are all the same. It's a formula...

This hotel is clean and modern , I was given wrong room ,checked in by a very miserable ,stern unkept looking chap wearing chief trousers ! Room was a double not a twin the sofa bed was old and dirty looking ,no bed lien to make it up anyway . Other hotel guest stood outside window smoking and chatting late evening and very early Sunday morning ,no trees or bushes to stop them standing so close .checking out the same miserable man was behind the reception desk with same uniform on ,crumbled and unkept look whilst other clean and presentable staff stood around.

Location for what I needed was great.
The room was nice. Familiar as a Holiday Inn. Bed was comfy and nice size room. Walk in shower and overall a good bathroom. My only complaint which isn't a complaint more an observation, the bathroom door in room 109 was extremely noisy. Thank goodness I was on my own. It would wake up anyone else in the room. It just needs some WD40. Breakfast was good as well. Would definitely stay again.

We stayed here for 4 nights whilst visiting family n the area. Good location and base for exploring the area and modern, reasonably clean rooms. Beds seem smaller than standard doubles and the one we had was extremely soft - my husband ended up sleeping on the sofa bed. Breakfast is included which is a good job as I'd resent paying for the limited selection available. All in all it was OK but no more but it was reasonably priced.

We had three rooms booked for family weekend away. Arrived late having phoned earlier. Check in was fast, efficient and friendly. We were all very pleasantly surprised at standard of rooms. Not luxury but very well equipped, comfortable, clean and very quiet (despite our room being on ground floor right next to hotel entrance). Had an excellent night's sleep. Good breakfast thrown in - very relaxed affair. All staff exceedingly courteous. Only paid £52 per room for a Saturday night - have paid more than double that and had far less on every count

Room Tip: One of our rooms was on front right by entrance - probably one of the worst they have yet it was fin...

I stayed here for a night with my wife and two young sons.

We've stayed at a lot of Holiday Inns and Holiday Inn Expresses, and this met the high standard of service I've come to expect.

The room was clean, not too hot and the bed was comfortable. My sons slept on a sofa bed, and they stayed asleep through the night - which is always a good sign! Not much of a view - our room overlooked the car park (but there was very little road noise when the window was closed).

Breakfast is fine - although not as big a selection as offered by some other HI Express hotels. There was a choice of cereals and baked goods - the hot selection was sausages, beans and scrambled egg.

There is also a limited choice of evening meals served after 6.30pm - but that was a bit late for our sons, so we went to The Crown in Ardleigh - about 5 minutes drive away and offering reasonably priced food.

The staff were friendly and knowledgable about the local area. Access is via a slip road on the southbound A12 - it could be quite easy to miss, although it is next to a Shell garage. There's otherwise not a great deal around in the immediate neighbourhood, but Colchester Zoo was about 20 minutes away - and Flatford was about a 15 minutes drive away.
