My husband surprised me by booking a night at Milsoms, 27 years after holding our wedding reception here when it was the Dedham Vale Hotel.

Rather a disappointing start, as our room was not ready, and cleaning it had not even started at 3.45pm. Apparently the previous guests had late check out, which I think should only have been permitted if the room could be ready again by check in time.

The room itself was delightful, large and airy, clean and well appointed. Possible suggestions for improvements, though not criticism, might be bath robes, better quality towels, and a proper hairdryer rather than a small inefficient one.

The bed was really comfy, nice duvet and pillows. Something the hotel cannot change is its position. If you want a really peaceful location, this may not be for you, as the drone of the A12, which is very close by, is very intrusive. This was worsened because it was a very warm night, necessitating the windows to be left open. That said, we slept well with the aid of earplugs!

We went down for breakfast about 40 minutes before the end of service, and the buffet looked decimated. A limited selection of fresh fruit was on offer, surprising, given we are at the height of summer. Our waitress brought us a pot of tea while we were at the buffet, but no cups, leaving us to find some from another table. My husband's full English breakfast was delicious, while my eggs florentine was largely inedible. Overcooked stringy spinach, frozen, I assume. And muffin that had been charred on a griddle rather than toasted. The eggs were in fact, poached to perfection, the rest was ghastly.

As at dinner the previous evening, NOBODY asked if everything was OK, or showed any interest at all. I had to seek out our waitress to pass on our comments about breakfast, but she seemed at a loss as to how to respond, although she said she would pass on our comments.

When we checked out, the receptionist did ask if we enjoyed our stay, and we repeated our comments on the eggs florentine and desserts the previous evening. No recompense was offered. I would say though that the receptionist has been very helpful in finding out some information for us for our onward journey.

We had a wonderful stay re-living the memories of our wedding here. However, this was despite some of the shortfalls, the most basic of which was feeling that nobody really cared if we had enjoyed our food. Service really matters, and I would like to have seen more effort made in addressing our comments (eg offering something else to eat?). It would make such a difference, particularly as this was a really special stay for us.

As at dinner the

Room Tip: Room 1 is large, airy, and very comfortable.

Great food. Amazing room and luxurious bed. Service second to none. A must place to stay if in the East of England. I stayed here for business and could not have been more relaxed and welcomed. Parking was easy. Room was spacious. Food was high standards. Such friendly staff

Visited as part of a wedding party, beautiful gardens and warming staff. We were allowed to check in early which helped us prepare for the day, room was perhaps a little small for the cost and the plug in the smaller sink was blocked however I would revisit as this minor inconvenience easily fixed.

A splendid old house, set in superb landscaped gardens, with easy parking and well sited to tour this lovely area. Our room (premium Superior) was spacious and well equipped and we were well impressed by friendly, well trained staff throughout.
The resturant is somewhat idiosyncratic with not even residents able to book a time or a table. In fairness, this created no difficulties on our visit although ordering drinks and each course from the bar/reception would not havebeen our preference at a hotel of this quality. Nice food, well cooked and neatly presented.
If we stayed for another two nights (as we certainly will if in this area) then we might eat in one night and dine at one of the other excellent loaal restaurants on the other.
A nice stay and good value.
