“Shocking Service”

Part of a row of 5 or 6 attached houses that look old and very Cotswolds. On arrival, the owner insisted we leave a positive Tripadvisor review. Sadly the interior has been renovated on a shoe string budget so that everything looks a little cheap and nasty. The mattresses and pillows for example are sealed in plastic covers which crinkle when you lie on them. The house is equipped with the absolute minimum, so don't expect hand soap, toilet paper, salt.... It's also best not to ask the owner for anything as they were shouting at us when we asked for a mid-week clean. Despite paying GBP135 (~USD200) for their cleaner, she refused to enter the property while we were there - apparently she was not comfortable when others were in the house. The cleaner then shouted at us for being there and stormed off, leaving us to go shopping for washing powder and cleaning on holiday.... The owner refused to refund the cleaning fee and threatened to not refund the deposit. Overall a very poor experience in this beautiful part of the country.

Management Response
15 Aug 2012
Letting Agents response:

We take guest feedback very seriously and we are very sorry that these guests felt that the standards of customer service provided by the owners let the property down. Middle Gable has received many positive reviews, however, on this occasion it is clear that the guests felt let down.

As letting agents for the property, we have had extensive communication with both the guests and the owners, to try to resolve the situation that arose with regard to a mid-stay turnaround at the property, requested and paid for by the guests. Unfortunately, we have not been able to establish the facts of what happened when the cleaner turned up at the property, as she believes that she was denied access to the house, whereas the guests believe that she refused to enter the property. Based upon these two very different opinions as to the cause, this quickly escalated into a dispute, which has led to the guests feeling that they received poor customer service and the owners feeling that they tried to provide a service, but were prevented from doing so.

As the two opinions with regard to the cause of the dispute are so different, it is perhaps worth noting other matters relating to customer service that have been raised with us, either by the guests or the owners:

• We understand that the guests booked a large grocery delivery, which arrived sometime prior to the guests arrival at the property, on a very hot day. By a fortunate coincidence, the owners happened to be at the property when the order arrived and were happy to carry in more than 15 bags of shopping and put the contents away in the cupboards and the fridge. This prevented perishable food being left outside the house in the hot sunshine, or the delivery driver departing without making the delivery;
• The guests noted that very little in the way of initial consumables are provided in the property. This fact is clearly stated on the website for Middle Gable, however, we have received 100% confirmation from the owners that toilet rolls and hand wash are always provided and that the hand wash was filled up by the owner immediately prior to the guests’ arrival. Clearly the guests felt that the overall range of initial consumables could have been broader, however, we are assured that the specific examples they highlighted are always provided;
• Mattress and pillow protectors are a necessity in holiday cottages that accept children. We will discuss the quality of the bed linen provided to guests, to ensure that it is appropriate for a 5-star property, however, this is the first time that anyone has raised a concern about the quality of any of the linen. As we actively seek feedback from all guests who stay in our properties, it appears that the majority of guests consider the linen to be appropriate;
• The owners of Middle Gable made a number of efforts to contact the guests, by both telephone and e-mail, to resolve the dispute that had arisen with the cleaner, however, the guests decided that they wanted to communicate via us. As we are letting agents only for Middle Gable, this extended the time taken to deal with the dispute, increasing the frustration of all parties.

Since the departure of the guests from Middle Gable, their GBP100 security deposit has been refunded in full and GBP80 of the GBP130 mid-stay turnaround fee has also been refunded, reflecting the fact that fresh bed linen and towels were provided to the guests, but no cleaning took place.

As noted earlier, we are very sorry whenever there are instances of guests feeling let down by standards of customer service, whatever the underlying cause. Fortunately, this happens very rarely, however, when it does we take these matters very seriously and undertake detailed investigations to try to prevent them happening again. We will continue to work with all our owners, to try to ensure that the standards of customer service that guests receive are commensurate with the quality of the property they are letting.

“Beautiful location, even more beautiful home”
Reviewed 30 July 2012 for a stay in July 2012

The Cotswold's is a lovely location for a relaxing holiday anyway and although Bourton-on-the-Water has many tourists (especially as it was very sunny when we stayed at Middle Gable) it's still a peaceful setting. The house itself was beautiful and we couldn't find one fault with it (although in the top room the floor slopes down so beware of that and hitting your head on the ceiling). Still it was the perfect relaxing holiday and we found plenty to do. I would suggest with young kids to visit Birdland and the dragonfly maze, a short 5/10min walk away from the house. There's plenty of footpaths around the area to go on walks and we also made the drive into Cheltenham for shopping which i highly recommend. The kitchen has everything you need to create a meal or you can walk to one of the local pubs. Personally we went to the Duke of Wellington and the Mousetrap. Both superb meals and good quality for money. It was a perfect getaway and I highly recommend it for everyone.

“Perfection, Charm, Cuteness and Comfort”

Our family of five, two teens and a seven year old, stayed here three nights and we wish we could have moved into the house forever. My daughter exclained that the house was like Snow White and Harry Potter together. The location in the best village in the Cotswalds is charming, the house and garden are gorgeous. We loved the old historical architecture and details. We also loved the modern cleanliness and comforts. We especially loved the heated floor in the family room, the spotless bathrooms and the well appointed kitchen. The walks to nearby villages directly from the house were charm itself. We can't wait to come back to Middle Gable!

“We wished it was our own holiday home.”
Reviewed 12 March 2012 for a stay in February 2012

Very central location yet nicely secluded, facing onto private gardens; upper floor views across the hills. The house is a real 17th century treasure - simple, spacious, stylish, very comfortable & a little quirky.
Bourton is a bit too busy with tourists - like us - but there were plenty of interesting & fun places to visit on foot (for a family aged between 5 & 60). Lots more to explore in the countryside around. We want to come back here again.

“Perfect location and great accomodations”

My wife and I, and her best friend rented the Middle Hall for a week last September. The owners were there to greet us. The interior has been upgraded with a large modern kitchen area and living room. The location was perfect, a 3 minute walk to the middle of the town and very convenient for day trips around the Cotswolds and Cornwall (Port Isaac).
It is a tourist stop during the day, but is always easy to find a place to eat, though some do require reservations.

In a way I hope not too many people read this review as we plan to stay there any time we visit England and want to make sure it is available. We love the area and highly recommend a walk to the Slaughters which is just across the 429.
