“Lovely place to stay, but not quite as expected”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2010

Firstly, this hotel is in a fantastic location. If you're used to city life and you want some quiet time away, I would highly recommend this place. The hotel is a very short walk from all of the attractions that Bourton-on-the-Water has to offer.

The service we recieved from who seemed to be the owner was great. She was a lovely person and made us feel very welcome from the moment we stepped in the door until we left. All other staff also seemed friendly and laid back which was nice.

The only flaw we found with the hotel was the room. My girlfriend had picked the hotel on the merit of the photographs on TripAdvisor but the room we had was a little bit tired. The lock on the door was a bit iffy and the whole room could have done with a bit of a refurb. Whilst is was far from terrible, for the price of the hotel we expected a little more from the room itself. That being said, the rest of the hotel including the bar were very nice and very comfortable.

Overall I would say this hotel is worth the price it charges and is sure to be a relaxing stay for guests. I would certainly recommend it. Very romantic location.

We were so pleased with our stay at Chester House. Our "Family room" was grand and had a nice couch, two extra single beds and a heavenly king bed! The bathroom was large, everything worked and the towels thick and fluffy! The staff and dining were excellent and this place is set in the prettiest of all the Cottswald's! Esay to find-parking. Highly recommend!

We had a really nice weekend here, couldn't fault the hotel lounge area, bar, garden and they served a very tasty breakfast.
Unfortunately we booked this last minute and our reservation was for the very last room available. Room 8, a ground floor room, a good size with a large bed and excellent bathroom facilities. The problem was, the only natural light in the room came via the glass door and this we had to keep covered by a curtain because the entrance to the room was in the garden which meant other hotel guests were in close proximity. This was deemed to be a superior room, and we didn't think it warranted the extra cost.
To be honest if this room had just been charged at the normal double room rate, we'd now be giving this hotel our glowing recommendation, because it actually is a very nice place to stay!

On arrival we were given a key to room 6. This is on the ground floor at the front with the window overlooking the road. It is also a family room with a single bed and two more singles stuck together. I returned to reception to say this is not what I had booked and was given a key to room 18. A much better room with a fire door whih we could open (it was a very sunny, hot weekend). The room was okay but overpriced.
As the weekend had beatiful weather, it obviously drew in the crowds. We decided to spend Saturday afternoon in the hotel garden reading and had decided that rather than have a late meal we would have a 'lite bite' before 5pm (they finish serving at 5pm). On requesting a menu at 4.15pm we were told 'it is quite so we have sent the chef home'.
The staff were all very helpful but they seem apathetic. I think because it is a tourist attraction and as they will always get business they don't think they have to try.

Arrived on Friday with friends, 10 of us, 4 of us celebrating special birthdays, and it was a fabulous weekend right from the start. The staff were really friendly and helpful with a good sense of humour. Our accommodation was brilliant. Breakfasts were great, lots to keep us going through the day. We ate at the Croft on Saturday night and had a delicious meal, couldn't really fault it, the staff were great, it was just a lovely evening. Of course the area in and around Bourton on the Water is stunning and I will definitely be visiting Chester House again. Have already recommended to several friends.

This was the only place that still had a room available one week before the bank holiday weekend, and I'm really pleased about that. This small hotel with around 20 rooms is in a great location, just behind the green with the river running through. Stayed in the Coach House in a spacious room (29) decorated in light colours with a seating area, TV, dressing table, hairdryer, closet, coffee/tea-making facilities, bottled water and biscuits. The hotel has very nice lounge/bar and breakfast areas. There are plenty of comfy sofas to sink into, and lit candles for atmosphere. There are also quite a few games available. Nice to have a comfortable place to relax in besides the hotel room! The cooked breakfast was tasty, and so were the croissants and fresh fruit salad. We ate in the restaurant the first night and enjoyed the food and the service. The room was spotlessly clean. The only things I can complain about is the ugly colour of the window-less bathroom: brown walls and floor, and the thin walls of the rooms. If you happen to have noisy neighbours, you might have some trouble getting a good nights sleep. We were woken up a bit early one morning as the people in the room opposite to ours were leaving. Also, if you require a very dark room to sleep, I recommend bringing a sleeping-mask.

We stayed at the Chester and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Bourton is a very picturesque little town with the river running through the middle. Yes, there are tourists but there are also interesting little shops, good restaurants, and lots of little streets and alleyways to explore on a walking tour of the town. I can't say enough about the hotel. The staff is excellent, breakfast delicious, and Mary at the front desk is a delight. She couldn't do enough to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. Our room overlooked a lovely garden where you could sit and have bar service after a day of walking from village to village in the hills. I highly recommend this establishment.
