“if this was my local i'd move in”
Reviewed 8 December 2011

don't know if this should really be classed as a restaurant, as its clearly a pub that sometimes does food. tucked away and a nice little place, i was so pleased we went looking for it. really good beer and cider, hospitable and knowledgable staff- perfect pub material. we did manage to grab something to eat, and if you can (as its not every day- more on demand/ booking really) i'd thoroughly recommend it. cheap, cheerful and really tasty. we had jerk chicken and a chocolate chilli- both of which were great!
as my title says, its a good job i don't live nearby as i think this place is great and would be in here all the time. as it is, will now always try and pop in when in cheltenham.

“Hospitable”
Reviewed 12 November 2010

We ate here on 8th November 2010. It was Monday, which is cold meat and bubble and squeak day. Bubble and squeak is a mixture of vegetables, usually including potato and cabbage, fried up. It is served with cold meat- beef or pork- and condiments (gravy, apple sauce, mustard, pickles etc). Our food was very tasty, wholesome and filling. It cost £4.95 each.

There is a hot special served at the Kemble every day. There is no choice, although if you do not fancy whatever is on offer that day, toasties are available. The Sunday lunch is reputedly excellent, and booking is mandatory.

We only went in for a beer. Six different draught real ales are on offer, and there is a good selection, from pale, weak, hoppy beers, to darker stronger ones. The landlord and his partner are engaging, as were the locals (hello Charlie!) when we visited. The pub has character, and a nice beer garden. The pub is in a side street not far from St. James's Street car park. It is well worth seeking out, and will be packed on race days.

Tourists, wanting to sample the best that England has to offer, could do worse than visit this pub. They will be served hearty food, and beer, and will be made most welcome. They will spend very little money, and will enjoy an authentic English experience, which, in the Cotswolds, can be rather difficult.
