Reviewed 6 November 2011

Booked an overnight stay at Ellenborough as an anniversary weekend away after reading a few of the excellent reviews already listed here.

The hotel is in an area we have visited before so already knew the location, the nearby Cleeve Hill is an excellent place to explore if you like walking & taking in some of the best views of the Cotswolds.

Upon arrival at the hotel, we had just about got out of the car in the car park when we were greeted by a young man who offered to drive us up the the main reception in the shuttle car (think golf buggy but bigger !)
The view of the hotel is very impressive, traditional Cotswold stone set the building off well & the grounds are immaculate
.
Arriving at reception out bags were carried in & the receptionist welcomed us to the hotel.
Within seconds our bags were taken to our room & we were given a guided tour of the hotels amenities & features, culminating in arriving at our room (Number 27)

The room was better than expected, although we were told at reception we had been upgraded it was still better than many other hotels that I have stayed at when having the top rooms.
The attention to detail in the rooms is what sets this place apart from others. As I had mentioned when booking it was an anniversary, petals had been placed on the four poster bed in the shape of a heart while other were spread around.
The TV had already been set to play music, & the heating was set just at the right level.

The rooms specifications are impressive, Wi-FI, Ipod dock LCD TV, all as standard. The room also had a well stocked mini bar, although prices are a little expensive. A safe is also in the room should you need one.
Without doubt though the star of the room is the bathroom, heated floor is a great addition, separate toilet, huge roll top bath which you could have swam in & a walk in shower which could accommodate several people if required !
The quality of the fittings throughout is the best I have come across at any hotel I have stayed at.

Dining in the Beaumont Room was a fantastic experience, the service was first class, attentive, polite, & super efficient all without feeling that they were hovering around you.
The menu had a fine selection for even the fussiest of eaters, all presented to perfection.
The wine list again had a great selection ranging from £30 to over £1000, along with the usual beers & cocktails.

While here we also managed to sample the spa, again the level of service & standard of the facilities is first rate.
The changing rooms for example we a work of art, fabulously laid out with every extra you could imagine.
The spa although small was just right for us & we were the only ones in there. The sauna & steam room was just the place to unwind then a dip in the jacuzzi to finish off. We really didn't want to leave.

This isn't the cheapest hotel you will ever stay, but if your looking to treat that special someone you can't go wrong.

My congratulations to all the staff at Ellenborough as they really have created one of the best hotel getaways possible.

My husband and I were treated recently to an overnight stay here after recovering from a long illness. What a place to be pampered. The setting is beautiful, green and lush grounds backing onto Cheltenham race course. The honey coloured Cotswold stone of the building is beautiful and the new parts of the hotel are incredibly in keeping with the original house. At a place as expensive and exclusive as this, one can often find it has become pretentious or the staff prudish, but not at all. Every single member of staff we met was excellent- genuinely friendly and clearly proud of the place they have made it. The professionalism was second to none. Nothing was too much trouble and every little detail thoughtfully attended to.

We stayed in a luxury room, a very comfortable bed and cosy lounge area. The spa is small but enjoyable for a steam or jacuzzi. I had a hot stone massage which was heavenly.

Dinner was such a wonderful experience, excellent food, wine (knowledgeable sommelier at hand) and service attentive but unobtrusive. Petit fours rounded things off nicely. I would recommend the Quail.

The boot room is stocked with Hunters and Dubarrys of all sizes so no need to bring your own wellies for a walk.

We would jump at the chance to come here again.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the “Audience with Rob Caskie” Evening at the Ellenborough Park. I can honestly say that Rob’s lecture on the Battle of Rorke’s Drift was a truly spell binding evening which I could not fault in any regard. The lecture was only matched by the magnificence of the facilities at Ellenborough Park which were as breath taking as Rob’s highly charged and emotional telling of the seminal battle. The evening ended on a wonderful high with an exquisite themed dinner accompanied by the fabulous staff who attended and took care of everyone. I am so glad that I decided to book on the meal as well as I would have missed out on an experience that I will not soon forget. All I can say is that I would recommend the Ellenborough Park to anyone for the fantastic facilities alone, but the dining and service is of the highest class. I can’t wait for the next event in the calendar!

been before for dinner, stayed for one night (unfortunately) recently. This hotel, is in my view the best in the south west. From when you arrive outside reception, you are met and your luggage and car is managed for you. Reception and checking in, is when your stay really starts. You are treated exceptionally well, given a tour of the the main hotel, and escorted to your room whilst your luggage is delivered to your room, Everything about this hotel exudes quality and it is very obvious that every detail has been planned for your stay. The staff are delightful, the rooms are outstanding, immaculate, beautifully designed with every detail considered and delivered. The restaurant is fine dining, but delivered in an intimate and thoughtful way. The food and wine choices are excellent. The spa and gardens are just stunning. If you are looking to stay anywhere in the south west you need to be staying here!!

Room Tip: any room is a good room in this hotel from what i saw

Once in a while you find a hotel that works for you on every level. You enjoy your time at the property so much that you regret that you did not stay an extra day, and you are already plotting how you can get back before you even leave. For us, this was one of those hotels.

The hotel consists of four main buildings. The impressive Tudor manor house contains the main public rooms of the hotel and about fifteen rooms. The other buildings are newly built or restored structures that sit very close to the manor house and are the location of the remaining rooms. We stayed in the Woodland Court rooms which are in a u-shaped building with the pool in the courtyard. The room was very spacious with a large wide foyer and a dressing alcove off of it. On either side of the alcove were closets that allowed for ample storage space. The bedroom area was very attractive with a comfortable country look and good use of rich fabrics and elegant furnishings. The quarter canopy top bed was the center piece. There was a nice writing desk, comfortable chairs to relax in and very good lighting. Our only complaint about the room was that the windows where a little too small. The large white marbled bathroom was pure luxury with separate shower and water closet, duel sinks and a beautiful large claw foot tub that you just had to use.

During our stay we had breakfast each morning in the elegantly paneled Beauford Dining room. Breakfast consisted of a standard buffet plus the option of ordering hot items off the menu. We had dinner each night in the less formal Tudor Club Brasserie which has a nice club like atmosphere. This location has menu choices that include some light fair options. All meals were very good with excellent service provided.

We did have enough time to enjoy a swim in the warm decent sized pool. There is also a very nice but small gym with full bathrooms next to the pool. We did not have an opportunity to use or see the spa which is part of the main building. A good place to relax is the Great Hall. The environment is that of a grand English country home and it is the perfect spot for a drink, tea, to read a paper, or check your email at the computer available to guests without charge. Free internet is provided if you bring your laptop and want to use it in your room.

Two features of the hotel really stood out. The staff is very friendly but professional. They are even willing to take time to chat with you. Second it is very obvious that no corners were cut when restoring and expanding this property. Everything looks great and blends in very nicely.

The only area that we thought could use some improvement was the landscaping. It is fine but not impressive like everything else.

Our stay might have been enhanced by low occupancy, but even if it was a little busier, I do not think that would have made that much of a difference. Wishing we could return soon, don’t miss out on a stay here.

Room Tip: Hard to say - all rooms are different.

Stayed one night at Ellenborough Park this week.
We loved the building, the interior and it's furnishings , the food and chef are fantastic, and overall the staff were really lovely. Nothing was too much for any of them.
Thanks to you all at the Hotel.
We shall return very soon for another stay.

Best wishes Angela
