“Luxurious and peaceful hotel”
Reviewed 22 January 2012

Had a short weekend stay at Ellenborough Park just before Christmas with my girlfriend as a treat for our respective birthdays. We were on a Mr and Mrs Smith package including dinner in the evenings (one day in the Restaurant, and Sunday in the Brasserie.)
From the initial greeting to the goodbye the staff were very welcoming and attentive but unobtrusive. Special mention to Jonathan in the dining room who added a touch of personality to the good service.
Hotel still feels very "new" in places and will be even better when it has "weathered in" a bit.
Our room in the new block at the back was very spacious, stylish without being over the top. The GF loved the 4 poster bed and the rolltop bath, and the hair straighteners the staff lent her for the entire weekend when she realised she had forgotten hers.
Brought walking boots ( which we realised we didn't need when we saw their boot room) and walked over to the racecourse and saw the steam railway on the Sunday morning.

Food was great and nicely presented but lacked a little bit of wow to take it to the top drawer.

We didn't have any spa treatments but did use the jacuzzi and small sauna, which was beautifully presented as with the rest of the hotel.

All in all it was a great and romantic stay and am looking forward to going back.

Amazing building, service and room! Stayed on a weeknight for one night. Got upgraded to a luxuryroom in the tower :). Arrived late but still had a swim in the surprisingly warm pool. Then had dinner at the brasserie and a couple of cocktails. Woke up early in the morning and had a chat with the porter who lent us wellies and coats and then we went on a walk up the mountain at 7am!would love to stay again!

This is a beautiful hotel with a great service and excellent attention to details. our room had a smart decor without being over the top and it was very comfortable and had all the necessary amenities. There is free wifi all over the hotel including the rooms which is great. The staff are very attentive and very helpful. The breakfast was great and was served in a beautiful setting. I would recommend the cream tea which is served in a beautiful room by a fireplace. The Spa is small but very clean and again all the details have been taken care of. If you enjoy walking, the hotel provides you with comfortable walking boots and jacket. We will definitely return to this hotel.

This has to be one of the best hotels in cheltenham, doesn't look mutch from the road entrance, but when you drive down to the hotel entrance, you get a simply beautifull restored residence. park up outside and let the staff do the rest, simply how it should be.I booked this hotel break for my wife's birhday treat. from the moment you walk in to reception the staff are impecable, luggage taken to your room and car parked, along with a quick tour of the hotel and services, then taken to our room (14) although there are a few steps,39 in total but well worth the effort as this has to be the best room in the hotel, with 360 degree views of the grounds and of the race course, the room impeccably presented in every way.We were booked in for the fine dining, just simply top drawer, excellent food and service, the breakfast also just as good.
We also used the well equipped spa, although small has all that is required, the hotel has an open heated swimming pool, you need to be brave to use this in january.
This hotel may not be in the budget bracket, but its well worth the outlay for a memorable break....we felt like royalty!!
We will be revisiting in the summer

Room Tip: room 14 in the tower

This hotel is in Southam outside Cheltenham and I have seen this property transform from an all girls school to an hotel that I used to work in as a Uni student, then a rather underwhelming hotel and now a very elegant retreat overlooking the racecourse in the distance. It has been transformed very sympathetically ,preserving all the old features and character that I remember from many years ago but offers modern and stylish facilities.
We called back for old times sake, just for a lunch, after Xmas and were very impressed by the ambience, the food and the service to the extent that we have booked Easter Sunday lunch there as we travel back to Kent from a wedding near Bristol.
It looks the perfect place for a relaxing and pampered weekend away and Cheltenham itself is a lovely town these days with excellent and varied shopping options not to mention the fantastic hiking opportunities across the Cotswold Hills.
Even though I lived in Southam for 13 years as a child, and am very familiar with the area, I would head here for a weekend away and we are just trying to work out when to go!

Ellenborough House doesn't disappoint on any front. Driving in this beautifully restored Cotswold stone residence is simply stunning. The detail both in the exterior details and the care taken to create an incredible interior in keeping with the age of the property is excellent and make for the finest surroundings for a superb stay. Our room was comfortable and furnished to a high standard with great views over Cheltenham racecourse. For those who love the Equine sport will love the fact that there's binoculars in the wardrobe provided. The bathroom was large with roll top bath, power shower with fittings and decoration to the highest standard. Drinks in front of the fire in the Great Hall are a must on a winter evening after a days shopping and sightseeing. We chose to eat in the hotels bistro which was not only well-priced but was restaurant quality fare. A big thumbs up for the bistro. The staff are helpful, friendly and attentive throughout and we wouldn't hesitate to book to stay again, a great hotel!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have superb views over Cheltenham racecourse, a great view.
