“Identity Crisis...Such A Shame.”
Reviewed 8 April 2012

How I wanted this to be so perfect...Easter Sunday Lunch at a perfect hotel in a oh so perfect setting.

A Chef who has cooked for the Queen - have not a few school dinner ladies ? - not a place that should need to boast and a menu without a typed heading that declares the date and day in it -Easter Sunday Lunch 08/04.

A Vodka Martini [ £8.50 ] with three pregnant olives without offer of a twist or straight up. So you think I ask too much - a hotel that aspires to be the only five star in the Cotswolds ?

Step forward the sommelier - German and breathtakingly precise, bespoke and brilliant in his choice of wines and attention to detail , a German striker with flair and panache who graces a culinary theatre that stages... tired roasts and vegetables that are served before the average starters have barely been finished , and deserts Eton Mess and Creme Brulee that would have been passable in Cafe Rouge.

This hotel demands and strives for a Lords of the Manor restaurant. It has an identity crisis - apart from its hotel clientel, who else will eat here - a restaurant that is not full on an Easter Sunday lunchtime surely tells its own story.

This is a hotel with a restaurant that it needs to shout about...sadly still a whisper.

But don't forget the German...!

I booked the 'Lazy Cotswold Sunday' package via Mr & Mrs Smith for my wife's birthday which included a night's stay together with Sunday lunch in the restaurant, dinner in the brasserie and breakfast on the Monday (plus some nice Mr & Mrs Smith extras). With the kids packed off to the grandparents this was a real treat, not cheap but certainly value for money given the excellent standard of the hotel and great levels of service. With the weather unusually warm for spring there was no problem for the staff to allow us to set a trend and dine on the terrace (which was full by the time we finished), the food on the set Sunday lunch menu was excellent. After this we were shown to our room, number 14, which was at the top of the tower, with fantastic views all round and decorated and furnished to a high standard. My wife had a spa treatment which she enjoyed and though small the spa was of good quality and the outdoor pool was a good temperature. Dinner and breakfast were also of a high standard and a late checkout was not a problem. A mention must be made about the staff who all were very attentive without being obtrusive (I cannot stand being too artificially fussed over) and nothing seemed to be too much. I'd have no hesitation in booking again (though would have to insist on the same room such was its great position in the tower) and recommending to friends and family.

Room Tip: Room 14 is at the top of the tower with great views, though you will need to be happy climbing the 3...

Just stayed at the Ellenborough Park. What a stay. Quality hotel top notch. Staff friendly and nothing too much trouble. Food great. Wandered round the grounds, totally chilled. Will certainly be booking again. My wife normally calls me Victor Meldrew but on this occasion I had nothing to complain about - she loved it, as I did!

We ate out on the terrace as it was such a nice March Day. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, we had excellent but unobtrusive service. The food was amazing - we had the three course set lunch - very good value for money - especially for a five star hotel. In spite of the fact it was mid week the terrace tables were all full and I think there were also people in the Dining Room. The Bistro also looked good although we preferred being in the open air on this occasion. It was a first time for us but we will return without a shadow of a doubt!

We found this place on Mr and Mrs Smith and absolutely loved it!! So much so that had we not already had reservations for the second part of our trip we would have stayed on! Right from the moment we arrived the staff couldn't do enough. The service was great and the food was excellent. We ate in the Beaufort dining room on the first night for a birthday treat and the food was first class and more than equalled Michelin starred restaurants that we had previously eaten in in London. We also ate in the brasserie on our second night (more informal), and the food still surpassed expectations. Our stay was made complete by perfect afternoon tea outside in the sunshine and early evening gin and tonics on the lawn (the staff were only too happy to provide a picnic rug for this). We could not recommend this hotel enough and we are already planning our return!

I stay in many top country house hotels as a guset of motor manufacturers and the majority fail miserably to match their hype.
This hotel is different and excels on absolutely every level. By the standards of 5 star hotels it is not even that expensive.
This was my second stay here with probably a year in between and the hotel is just as good now as it was then despite my now having a much higher expectation.

We are very local and used to visit frequently when it was the De la Bere hotel.
We only dined here so can not comment on the rooms.

We came for the mothers day lunch and will definitely be coming back.

We were welcomed outside and shown to a nice room with open fire for drinks with a harpist playing.

Later taken to the table and enjoyed a brilliant meal with very good service, also a nice touch of a gift bag from the spa for my wife and a flower waiting on the table for my wife to take home.

We then went back to the large room for coffee and sat in front of the large fire, nice.

The head waiter then came to check all was ok with the meal and to be honest it was great but he had noticed we had to wait quite a while for desert and offered to discount our bill by taking our two children's meals off which he insisted on doing.

Cant wait to go back and be spoilt again! would definitely recommend.

Alan Graham.
