“A beautiful hotel”
Reviewed 22 July 2013

My husband, two adult daughters and I stayed here for 4 nights last week and we had a superb time. It lived up to all the reviews I had read before booking. We normally go abroad but decided this year it would be easier to stay in England and I am so pleased we did. With the weather being so hot we were able to enjoy the swimming pool which very rarely had more than 2 other people in it. We stayed in rooms 55 and 57 which were both delightful. Our room had a 4 poster bed and our daughters' room had a small patio with table and chairs which we used each evening for pre dinner drinks. The staff were all very helpful and courteous.

Breakfast was delicious with a vast array to choose from. The cooked breakfast was perfectly cooked. Although this is a very expensive hotel everything was of a very high standard and I would love to return.

Room Tip: We were in the luxury rooms but took advantage of their special offer.

Stayed for 2 nights. Was visiting from Australia. No family rooms so the the kids had an adjoining room. Expensive to pay for 2 rooms but you get what you pay for. The hotel is steeped in history with a great blend of modern and old. Rooms beautifully clean...every corner was dust free as you would expect. The bed was amazingly comfortable....will see if I can buy one in Australia. Thank fully our rooms had air conditioning as the weather in the UK was hotter than Australia. As such the rooms were cool and quiet. Underfloor heating in the bathroom ensured a lovely temperature in the morning. Stayed with a hoard of family so fully utilised pool, brasserie and bars. Would have been nice to use the spa too but did not have time. Breakfast was really good.

Room Tip: We had family staying in a range of rooms in the hotel. They all seemed nice.

We are delighted that you all enjoyed your stay here at Ellenborough Park. It must be strange to be staying in England when the temperature was so high. We are pleased that the air-conditioning was efficient for your stay. We are pleased too, that all members of your family enjoyed the facilities here at the hotel. Next time, try to make time to experience the Spa and one of our signature Babor treatments.
Kind regards

Very nice old place with a few modern additions done just right. The dining areas are absolutely fabulous and full of history. You really feel like an aristocrat here, but its not opulent or overwhelming. It's cozy, like a countryside manor. There's lots and lots of green grass and beautiful vegetation around, with a racecourse not far away and even field hares jumping across the lawn!

The only thing keeping me from giving this place five stars (though I would have given it four and a half, if I could) is that there's a bit of noise from car traffic. Not audible in the rooms, mind you! Just when you're walking around. And it's a shame too, because the surroundings do really encourage walking around and the traffic noise is just enough to keep you from fully relaxing. Other than that, it's an oasis of peace.

The staff are a lovely, multicultural bunch. Young, lively and very helpful.

Rooms are excellent, food just as great.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Woodland Court building are right by the pool. That can be either good or bad. It's...

We arrived in time to have the afternoon tea which compared favourably with the top London hotels.A minor criticism would be to have more sandwiches and less cakes. The scones were superb and the setting was superb.
The room was comfortable and quiet .The staff were attentive without being obtrusive.
I had the English breakfast in the morning with the addition of the black pudding which I enjoyed.
The only other problem we had was finding it as the hotel has such a small sign outside. It would help to have a sign further along the road .

Room Tip: We had a room in the old part which is more central

If you are after a luxurious retreat, look no further! Fantastic place overlooking the Cheltenham area. Large rooms with spacious beds. Wonderful outdoor pool and a kitchen to kill for. Great staff and great service. We will come back, bringing family and more friends. The absolute best hotel I've stayed at in this part of the country.

Booked this on the 3 nights for the price of 2 deal to celebrate mine and my boyfriend’s joint birthday, we both wanted a 3 day getaway in the country. My mother has stayed here many times and raved about it so thought we would book for our romantic getaway. Overall, it was a lovely experience and very good value for money - except the fine dining & breakfast.

The hotel itself is beautiful and in a great location, 10 minute’s drive away from Cheltenham centre and very close to cute quaint villages. The hotel itself is definitely 5 star, the staff are brilliant, they say hello to you before you have even seen them! We felt very welcome immediately.

We were slightly disappointed at the breakfast on both mornings we had it, price was included in the room cost but I don’t think it was worth £30 – the fruit, yogurt, gluten free toast etc was delicious but the cooked breakfast let it down. It was cold as if it had been lying around, the sausage was not cooked enough and the back bacon was chewy. Shame as the produce seems of great quality and from everything my mother said about it, I was a bit shocked when it arrived. On the day we asked for the bacon and sausages to be well done, it was much better.

We had dinner in the brasserie which was lovely, burger was great and so was the smoked chicken salad which we got as a main. Nice touch of gluten free or ‘normal’ bread on the table. Having heard rave reviews of the fine dining experience, we booked it for diner, only to be told by the manager on the day that they had binned a fridge worth of produce so we couldn’t order any fine dining starter, just mains or desserts. Also that it would be in the brassiere as opposed to the Beaufort dining room. This was very disappointing and although the food was good, £90 was steep considering we didn’t get the whole ‘fine dining’ experience – I had been told by previous guests you get a ladle of soup to start, the Beaufort room is beautiful, the whole experience from getting nibbles beforehand whilst you wait for your table in the Great Hall to dressing up in smart clothes was great etc. Next time we visit we will book the fine dining experience again and hope it’s the real deal. I am a real foodie and the presentation of the dishes was picture perfect, the dishes also delivered on taste.

The room itself was beautiful, just like the hotel it is total luxury. The bathroom is amazing – a roll top bath, his and her sinks, lovely toiletries. The bed was so comfy, the sheets and pillows were soft and I really feel like we got great value for money with the room deal. The evening turndown service is an unexpected surprise, especially the chocolates and water left as a nice touch. The hotel staff go over and above, nothing seems to be a problem and they are so friendly. The facilities are great, the pool would be lovely on a hot day and the grounds are beautiful, we got lots of amazing photos!

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Ellenborough Park and will be returning very soon. It’s a shame about the breakfast and that we didn’t get the proper fine dining experience, we put it down to being a one-off . I just feel it was a lot of money considering we ate in the brasserie and the ‘fine dining experience’ was not there, the food itself was delicious though, the Chateaubriand of beef was just amazing as was the jus! We wouldn’t have minded not being able to choose a starter, if it was hosted in the Beaufort dining room and we got the whole experience – we walked past and the room was empty!

The food hasn’t put us off returning and I will be booking again very soon, we have put it down to being a one-off. We got exactly what we wanted from the stay, a relaxing getaway in a countryside hotel.

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary in June 2013. Right from the start when our car was driven away to private parking to the rose petals and bottle of champagne in our room, the 5-star service was evident. We had a lovely room, near the pool and our own private terrace with gate so we could sit outside - and enjoy our champagne. We had dinner in the fine dining restaurant and felt the dishes were really creative and tasted amazing. We've been to a number of Michelin-starred restaurants and I would say the food is on a par with them, but felt the maitre d's attitude could have been improved. Our starters arrived cold (scallops) and when we were asked how our meal was, which wasn't until the end of the meal, we didn't even get a 'sorry' or the starter taken off the bill. We were just told that 'the kitchen service had changed around' which we didn't feel was good enough - and certainly, if they are going for a Michelin star, cold food/service like this won't cut it!
Apart from that (and another minor slip when we were brought canapés twice having our aperitifs), I would say this was a lovely trip. We felt very looked after and spoilt. Another nice touch was a bottle of still water left in our car when it was driven back to us, together with a note thanking us for our stay.
I think if they can just fix those small errors in the restaurant/bar service this place would be absolutely perfect.
Also, just a word to say the reception staff were terrific and really helpful when we arrived later than expected due to accidents on the motorway and they rescheduled my massage in the spa to the next day.

Room Tip: Try and get a room by the pool with a private terrace.
