Owner description: The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is a 13 mile steam and diesel heritage railway in the beautiful English Cotswolds. Visit the GWR stations at Toddington (postcode GL54 5DT), Winchcombe (GL54 5LD), or Cheltenham Race Course (GL50 4SH). Free Parking, and there is so much to do in addition to riding on the heritage trains. There are authentic Great Western Railway stations and well-stocked shops. Catering options include the buffet car on the train, the Flag & Whistle Restaurant at Toddington Station and the 1950s themed Coffee Pot cafe at Winchcombe Station. There is a model railway coach and the Discovery Coach at Winchcombe Station, whilst at Toddington there is a self-guided heritage trail, a children’s play area, a have-a-go signalbox and a locomotive yard viewing area. Check out our website to see the operating days, the train times and the range of this year's special events, both for enthusiasts and for children.

My husband and I are volunteers on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway so are somewhat biased. However, it is a beautifully scenic line with fantastic stations and good available both on the train and at the coffee shop at Winchcombe and The Flag and Whistle at Toddington. I can say that I get many compliments about the railway and its volunteer staff from the general public

Having fairly recently visited the Didcot Railway Centre and Bluebell Line railways, I was disappointed that here, the collections of carriages and locomotives are not accessible to visitors. It feels like a museum where you can't really see much of the exhibits.

On the positive side, the length of the line gives a decent journey time, the catering is good, there are a good selection of railway books/magazines etc for the hobbyist. The trains themselves should be the stars of the show, but the ones running on the day of my visit were not exactly pristine.

Speaking to some of the people manning the trains, it seems the whole place is run by volunteers. What is badly needed is some professional management and direction. This could be a great railway destination, but as of now it lags far behind the competition.

Dear RCimino
Thanks for visiting the railway. You are quite correct about it being created and operated by volunteers. We think of it as a ‘living museum’ for the benefit of the public and ourselves. The railway you saw has been created from little more than an old dismantled trackbed and the volunteers here can be justifiably proud of what has been achieved over the past thirty years. Many serious problems have been overcome along the way, including recent embankment failures which cost over £1million in donations to repair. Through the vision and determination of past and present members we are continuing the tasks of rebuilding locomotives, repairing rolling stock, improving facilities and extending the railway to Broadway. In the future, with more volunteers, we will continue to improve the railway. There is a locomotive yard viewing area behind the locomotive depot buildings at Toddington where visitors can see the locomotives in the yard. Please see our website for details.

This train trip is a great and nostalgic way to see the surrounding countryside. Great for kids and adults alike! The conductor was friendly and helpful. We joined the train at Toddington and just rode up and back without getting off, but many people did take the opportunity to get off the train and visit the area. If you want the steam train (rather than diesel), but sure to check the schedule. Highly recommend!

Go for a ride on a preserved railway We joined the train at winchcombe to travel to the end of the line at Cheltenham racecourse. The train was being pulled by a vintage diesel locomotive although there was also a steam train working at the same time in the opposite direction.
£11 return per person for three station stops. Not bad and the society requires all the income it can get so we felt it was worth while although in comparison to the North Yorkshire preservation society it felt like a poor cousin, However, I do appreciate all the work that goes on to keep these lines open.
