The delightful Scott is indeed a great reason to stay but there is more to this place than a witty, Canadian, raconteur.
Really great prices (if you find a price on Expedia or LateRooms call the Hotel, they'll match it and try to tailor a room to meet your needs). I stay in Cheltenham once or twice a week and at £70 for B&B the Clarence is a steal.
Rooms are simple but spotless, decent toiletries, fluffy towels and windows that open to let in birdsong from the quiet square outside and (thankfully) heat from inside as room 5 got a touch warm.
Lively bar, and Scott tries to open up conversations so that it isn't filled with lonely solo business travellers hiding behind books.
Great breakfast, served from 7.00am - so many of Cheltenham's owner run properties seem to think that 7.30 or 8.00 is ok but for me that's just too late and I head out hungry.
Marks and Spencer quality for Aldi prices, worth a try.

The hotel is ideally placed to explore Cheltenham. It is located in a quiet residential square that is only 15 minutes walk from the heart of Cheltenham. The staff were helpful when we arrived or needed any help with directions. Just be aware that breakfast serving stops at 9 but it does mean you are out and about earlier.

Thanks very much for your review, I am really pleased that you had a good time. Breakfast midweek ends at 9.00am but we are quite flexible! Breakfast at the weekends ends at 10.00am so more of a lie in! I do hope we will see you back in Cheltenham soon

Jut back from a three night stay in the Clarence Court over the Easter weekend..Very central location and brilliant value. The hosts and he staff are lovely and very helpful, especially as I was travelling with my elderly and disabled mother. just be aware the the steps leading from the car park to the entrance are steep but there was a good handrail so it was manageable.Apart from the breakfast which was delicious each morning, we ate twice in the Joules restaurant in the evening. Good pizza pasta and what I would class as good gastro pub dishes. All well cooked and well presented. It is an old, listed property and the rooms are not as sound proofed as a modern hotel but did not bother us too much. We stayed in room to on the grund floor next to reception, lovely views of the park at the front.

I would certainly return for a weekend break

Central location only 10 mins walk into the town centre. Myself and 2 friends shared a room and whilst it was compact for 3 people it had everything we needed, was very clean and the beds were comfy. The staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel bar is great for a few drinks before bed, reasonably well stocked for choice. Breakfast the next day was yummy, very hot and fresh. However the Tea did taste of chlorine slightly which was the only thing we found wrong with this hotel! Coffee tasted great though. Overall a great stay and I would go back.

Visited Cheltenham many times but have never stayed before as we only live 60 miles away in
historic Shropshire. Looked on Trip advisor and felt from the reviews that it sounded our sort of
hotel ( private / family run ) and that the location, prices were just right. We stayed for two nights
and the Wellesley room - ground floor overlooking the very quiet garden square, next to no traffic
and lots of birdsong. Very large room sympathetically decorated and furnished for a room in
a Georgian period town house. As well as the beds, side tables, writing desk, courtesy tray on
a table there was a huge sofa and armchair, freestanding wardrobe and a very nice reproduction
chest on chest. Still acres of open space. Good lighting though I would have appreciated another
light behind the armchair for reading. Very well lit & spacious bathroom with large bath and large
separate shower cubicle. Personal preference this but I would have liked a lock on the bathroom
door. Nice soft snowy white towels - good quality toiletries. Incidentally the bedlinen was of very
good quality and very clean indeed. Super comfortable mattress and even the pillows passed
muster, décor was good and in good order although in any Grade 2 listed building there will
always be small things to do. The bar/lounge/bistro were all in the windowed basement. The
small lounge was well furnished & comfy (would be nice to have a couple of cushions) The bar
was very smart and well stocked and was accessible from the hotel or the square. The bistro
type restaurant was fairly spacious, not too close to adjacent tables. AND they use proper large
linen napkins here all the time. Excellent menu, great chef who not only cooks well but presents
to a better standard than many restaurants. Had a very good meal at a reasonable price - good
well priced wine selection. Only tiny niggle was that in the evening with only top lights we
found the tealight on our table to be less than adequate - waitress brought another light but
we were surprised to find at breakfast that there were some very effective wall lights. Breakfast
was first class, lots of pastries, yoghurts ( no plain ) three varieties of fresh melon and fresh
fruit salad plus excellent quality, very generous cooked breakfast. Forgot to mention that I had
the best Caesar salad ever in the bistro, well done chef.
All the staff were very helpful - if reception was unattended ( quite reasonable in a small hotel)
then a ring of the bell instantly produced someone, frequently Scott the very friendly, helpful
and energetic manager. We paid £100 per night including breakfast, we booked direct with the
hotel and we feel that for an expensive area such as Cheltenham we got full value, Free safe
off road parking, free Wi-Fi extra milk etc for the room tray on request. Do we recommend, yes
we do and we will happily stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the square are very quiet. Wellesley room is huge.

Scott and The Clarence Court family made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Our room wasnt ready, however we were given a map and directions to explore Cheltenham, told to leave our car so we could get a nice lunch out. Location is perfect, a short walk to the centre of Cheltenham yet once you reach the hotel, situated across from a lovely park area, you dont hear any traffic or general noise.......The room (room 20) was faultless, on the top floor overlooking the park, beautifully decorated and set out, everything was pristine, including our Teddy room guard........

We had arranged to meet family for the evening, and had booked a restaurant table in town, but on Scott's advice we changed and booked into Joule's, and so glad we did.....the food was just gorgeous, beautifully served, freshly prepared........a food lovers gem......if you dont stay at the hotel, the restaurant is so worth a visit.

All the staff family are helpful, providing excellent service with quality care and a fabulous sense of humour......special thanks to Martha!

This was our first visit to Cheltenham, and we can say with confidence that we will definately book again!

We stayed for one night at the Clarence Court for our anniversary. We chose the hotel due to its close proximity to Cheltenham town centre and the reasonable price. The hotel is situated in a leafy and quiet part of the town so you feel safe and relaxed but just walking distance from the action.

The room was clean and tidy and very well presented. The bathroom was very modern and had everything we needed.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful, they also had a really good knowledge about Cheltenham.

Breakfast was delicious, served piping hot and to order and didn't have to wait long to be served.

We didn't have an evening meal in the hotel as we wanted to get out and about... if you are looking for a nice place to eat try the 'Dine India' restaurant just around the corner. We only paid £30 for 2 curries, rice, 2 starters and 2 alcoholic drinks! They have only been open a few months and the food and service was exceptional!

We really had a lovely stay and would highly recommend the hotel.
