I ate here last night as a table of four and everything we ate was delicious. The full restaurant was a credit to the cooking but made for occasional delays in service which was, nevertheless, light and friendly. The ambience was good - we never felt rushed and the layout is such that every table feels private, although toward the end of the evening the convivial chatter from the dozen or so tables with contented diners made for high background noise.
A short but enticing menu had us all talking - what to choose when everything sounded so good and the dishes being served to neighbouring tables looked so fine. Bread arrived - 6 beautiful pieces - 2 fenel flavoured white mini loaves, 2 slices of spelt & ale bread and two soda bread buns - with the excellent butter these set the tone. Starters of Crisp Megrim Sole, Crab Salad and Devilled Cornish Sardines were pretty to look at and better to eat. My sardines were crisp, plump, moist and served with a delicious hollandaise sauce.
3 mains of Roast Skate and a Roast Pollock with mushrooms were again all pictures on the plate and tasted as good as they looked. Pollock is not well flavoured fish but cooked lightly with the flesh flaking off nicely and teamed with mushrooms, kale and truffles it rose to the occasion - delicious. Two bottles of a reasonably priced and crisp Sancerre complimented the dishes.
Two excellent chocolate terrines, 2 cheese boards featuring great British cheeses and some excellent coffee rounded of one of the best meals I've enjoyed this year.
