Description: Please note. The Royal Union is firstly a Pub. We just happen to turn out great food from our tiny kitchen. If you're looking for Michelin Starred, there's one up the road. If you want traditional food, well prepared, cooked and served in a relaxed informal atmosphere, look no further. Tucked away in the Tivoli area of Cheltenham which is half way between the Town's Railway Station and it's centre. Specialising in real ales (8 generally available)and sharing meals for two to thirty people (Legs of Lamb, Ribs of Beef, Shoulders of Pork, whole chickens and 20oz Steaks). The sharing Sunday roasts are fab. Friendly staff and locals create an almost unique atmosphere. No blaring piped music but live Jazz on Sunday nights. A great place if you like character and class.

“Perfect to Share”

We went in a group of 6 and ordered a combo of the Steak Sharing meal and burgers. I must say the presentation was impeccable, the food was plentiful and above all, blinking delicious!

I am a big fan of real ale and thought I knew a lot of them, but the selection went beyond even my knowledge. I was going to pip for a trusted pint, but upon a recommendation from the barstaff, vouched by a local, I tried something new, and very glad I did too. The staff were extremely helpful and corteous throughout our visit and we enjoyed every minute.

If you are looking for disco music or sky sports, this isn't your kind of place. But for me, a proper pub with proper food and proper beer is exactly what I am after. Although about a mile and a half away, I think this might be my new local

“Exactly what a pub should be”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2013

Roaring fire? Check. Friendly locals? Check. Excellent range of ales? Check. Comfy seating? Check. Dogs allowed? Check.

The Royal Union may not be the best-known of Tivoli's pubs (naming no other names...) but it is definitely the very best. Situated in the back streets on a corner, the pub is a quiet presence but is definitely worth discovering.

The drinks are well-priced (another novelty in Tivoli...) and the locals/barmaid happy to give advice. They also do an excellent brunch on Sundays, which also has live music. There is a well-stocked library near the door and a range of newspapers and board games to amuse you during a nice Autumn afternoon.

It has been said here before: this is a brilliant pub.

“Cheltenham's best kept secret”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2013

The Royal Union has to be Cheltenham's best kept secret. Many people I have spoken to have never heard of it or know where it is. They're missing out. Set on the corner of a terrace in the Tivoli area you can't miss it as it's painted pale green and stands out. It is exactly what a pub should be, somewhere to have a drink, a chat, a bite to eat all without widescreen TVs or loud music blaring out or youngsters shouting at the top of their voices. It's nice to go somewhere where people are reading a book or newspapers while enjoying a drink and it seems to have a fairly eclectic clientele. The pub is firmly a real ale establishment priding itself on a varied selection of real ales that change regularly and the landlord will happily advise and discuss them as well as giving you a taster before buying. The food on offer is excellent, well prepared, imaginative and reasonably priced. The other thing to mention is the decor. It certainly isn't trendy and I think the best way to describe it is quirky or bohemian. Nothing matches, there are different sized tables, armchairs scattered amongst wooden chairs, random paintings on the wall and it works well which is a change from the identikit chain pubs. The Royal Union is a proper pub, a proper local and well worth a visit.

“Brilliant local pub. Brilliant food.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

I couldn't believe my luck when I discovered The Royal Union in Cheltenham. It is a fantastic pub with a superb landlord who was very welcoming when our party arrived.

We went for a leg of lamb to share. This was beautifully cooked and the side dishes of roast vegetables and thick cut chips were amazing. The meal came with a nice complimentary bottle of red which went down a treat. Fantastic value.

We will be back.

We went for Brunch, loved the choice of cooked breakfast, cereals and toast, coffee and juice in lovely relaxing surroundings for a lazy Sunday with guitarist playing. Newspapers were very welcome and such a nice friendly welcome, how a pub should be! Brunch all the above for £10 lovely little gem.really enjoyed, nice little touches in the pub and surroundings also.
