The Old Restoration surpassed our expectations when we visited for a meal and a drink. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food in what is, after all, a chain pub. In fairness, it doesn't pretend to be anything else!
the staff were friendly and helpful, the food appeared quite quickly, but not so quickly to suggest that it had been prepared in too much of a rush. I had the sirloin steak with a blue cheese and mushroom sauce, which came with a grilled tomato, a flat mushroom, onion rings, , a lovely litle pot of peas and a bigger pot of chips. It was exactly as described on the menu, the steak was smothered in the sauce, which was delicious!
Everything was well cooked. The chips were well done, just the way I like them, and my steak was cooked medium as I had requested. It was a very nice piece of meat, I have to say. The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the fact that the peas were a bit hard for my taste.
Drinks wise, the bar had a very good selection of traditional real ales. It also does good value cocktails if you liek that sort of thing, as well as the usual selection of lagers, soft drinks and spirits. The wine choice looked quite good for a pub.
The atmosphere was very pleasant when we were there at about 7.30pm. There were a few people in the pub, but not the scrum I associate with a Friday evening! I would describe the pub furniture as traditional, but perhaps a little bit worn.
Overall, we foudn that the Old Restoration provided a friendly, enjoyable service and a good value, tasty steak dinner. Nothing that you can't find anywhere else, but well cooked and filling.
