I had walked passed L'Artisan a few months back -- 'Hello' I said to myself -- that looks an interesting place, so we booked it for my birthday meal without reading a single review beforehand. From the moment we were greeted (Bonsoir) with an open door, to being escorted to our reserved table - I just knew everything would go well.

A choice of homemade bread, accompanied by truffle butter, a canape to have with our aperitif whilst we perused the menu. The menu was uncomplicated and offered ample variety. The food when it started coming was a work of art -- French perfection -- each portion made with care and with attention to detail -- the vegetables were particularly inspirational - a roll of green cabbage encasing red cabbage, a pastry basket enclosing ratatouillle -- the Agneau Henri was full of flavour with little fat, often associated with lamb. The dessert was equally interesting - a pear tart with a purple sorbet.........of mulled wine! Never had that before.

Service was pleasant, and often amusing, and paced so that there wasn't a long wait between courses. You really do feel you have been teleported to France!

So if you want an excellent meal in Cheltenham a visit to L'Artisan is a memorable must do. I will definitely go there again ---- very, very very soon!

Small but perfectly formed sums up this good value French Bistro. The lunch for eight family and friends was a brilliant success thanks to the warm friendly service and great food. Little touches like an amuse bouche after the home made bread, having a gluten free roll for one of the party and accompanying vegetables all interestingly prepared all made for a memorable meal. The food itself was spot on - mushroom risotto wrapped in salty Palma ham- meltingly tasty caramelised pork and a well balanced cheese plate with unusually just the right ratio of bread to cheese. We're heading back soon to try out the wider choice and more complex dishes of the dinner menu.

Eating at L'artisan was a very pleasant experience, and it is certainly popular, with pretty much every table reserved on the night we went. It all felt authentically, quite formal, French........waitresses in customary black and white outfits, starched linen, lots of cutlery and glasses etc. But it also felt relaxed and you were made to feel very much at home by the maitresse d’.

Food was uniformly good, without having a real "wow" factor......but you did get the sense that the chef was trying just a bit too hard. The Scallops and Prawn Skewer would have been better if the dish had had one or the other, and the main courses came with multiple little bits of vegetable - a ratatouille nest here, some sauté potatoes, a parsnip mousse (which really didn't add anything, the parsnip flavour rather diminished by the cream and other ingredients.....just straight parsnip puree would have been better). You have to be a really exceptional chef to carry this level of complexity off, and the standard of cooking wasn’t quite up there........spending some of the undoubted extensive preparation time on fewer things, would reap rewards I feel.

Dessert was the highlight - pear and almond tart is such a classic that you will always compare with loads of tarts you may have sampled in the past, but it was spot-on.......really fresh, just the right level of almond and a lovely soft pear.

So, it was good, but could have been even better if the dishes had been a little simpler and a touch lighter (yes, I know it was French, and you should therefore expect the artery attack of cream and butter). But, I would certainly recommend.

Having heard wonderful things about L'Artisan Cheltenham, we were very eager to try it. When the opportunity presented itself, it surpassed our expectations.

It is actually a little corner of France. The uncontrived "Bonsoir" you receive as you enter sets the tone for an authentic French meal. Lovely home-made bread to start, a varied and enticing menu to choose from and excellent, attentive service throughout. We had a wonderful seafood profiterole to start with followed by slow-cooked lamb and a filet steak - Seignant to order and delivered exactly that. We were not left to linger hungrily yet there were good intervals between the courses, including an Amuse Bouche before the starter and a sweet one with our after dinner coffees. the atmosphere is buzzing and bistro-like and it is a wonderful dining experience if you are celebrating a special occasion. if you just want a fantastic meal for the sake of it, you will be hard pressed to find a comparable experience in Cheltenham. Thank you Elisabeth and Yves for a sublime evening. We will be back!
