Booked this hotel due to its convenient location for what we wanted to do in Cheltenham that weekend. Looking at the website the hotel looked nice, and from the outside we were certainly not disappointed. The hotel was clean and the reception areas looked modern, however the room left us feeling cold and underwhelmed. We were in a double room in the basement and when we opened the door it felt like we had gone back in time. The wooden bed frame was badly worn and the curtains, quite frankly, were hideous, and combined with a smell of damp in the room and a lumpy duvet was certainly far from what we expected from the website. I wouldn't have minded so much had we not paid over £100 for this room - it was certainly not value for money. When going out in the evening, we were very surprised to open the door and be confronted with one of the house staff doing the ironing in the corridor directly outside the door!
Breakfast felt as though we were having it on the set of Fawlty Towers - 1970s patterned china again and I was absolutely speechless when, despite two of us being sat at the table, a toast rack came over with one slice of toast in it! Half a slice of toast each does not a breakfast make! When we asked for more toast the waiting staff just looked completely shocked! Maybe because they had just caught sight of the half dead roses on the tables!
It is a shame because the building is lovely and the location is brilliant - this hotel could be something absolutely amazing with just a little bit of love and investment.
Certainly wouldn't go back there for the money - would be better to spend less and stay at the Thistle on the edge of town and use the money saved by staying there for public transport/taxi into the town centre.
