“Like a trip back to the 70s”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2014

Booked this hotel due to its convenient location for what we wanted to do in Cheltenham that weekend. Looking at the website the hotel looked nice, and from the outside we were certainly not disappointed. The hotel was clean and the reception areas looked modern, however the room left us feeling cold and underwhelmed. We were in a double room in the basement and when we opened the door it felt like we had gone back in time. The wooden bed frame was badly worn and the curtains, quite frankly, were hideous, and combined with a smell of damp in the room and a lumpy duvet was certainly far from what we expected from the website. I wouldn't have minded so much had we not paid over £100 for this room - it was certainly not value for money. When going out in the evening, we were very surprised to open the door and be confronted with one of the house staff doing the ironing in the corridor directly outside the door!
Breakfast felt as though we were having it on the set of Fawlty Towers - 1970s patterned china again and I was absolutely speechless when, despite two of us being sat at the table, a toast rack came over with one slice of toast in it! Half a slice of toast each does not a breakfast make! When we asked for more toast the waiting staff just looked completely shocked! Maybe because they had just caught sight of the half dead roses on the tables!
It is a shame because the building is lovely and the location is brilliant - this hotel could be something absolutely amazing with just a little bit of love and investment.
Certainly wouldn't go back there for the money - would be better to spend less and stay at the Thistle on the edge of town and use the money saved by staying there for public transport/taxi into the town centre.

Room Tip: Certainly avoid the basement - other rooms might be better

Sorry that you were not satisfied with all aspects of your stay at Cotswold Grange. The incident a breakfast would seem to be a misunderstanding on the part of our staff – apologies - we can only guess that when the order was taken only one of you was at the table. We do hope you enjoyed the rest of your breakfast and were happy with what was on offer including a selection of fresh fruits; yogurts; cereals; fruit juices; tea / coffee; toast; preserves; and a full cooked breakfast – this is something for which we have a very good reputation overall.

As you mention we are in a very convenient location – just half a mile from the High Street yet in a tranquil tree-lined avenue in a historic part of Cheltenham with wonderful period architecture and beautiful parks.

We offer a clean comfortable environment with great amenities - a restaurant, bar, free on-site car parking, free broadband Wi-Fi internet access – and taking all this in to account we believe that we present good value for money in Cheltenham.

We are always making improvements to our Hotel and have some exciting developments planned for the near future which may be more appealing to your sensibilities – we do hope that you’ll give us another opportunity and we’re confident you’ll have a very pleasant stay with us.

Yours sincerely

We booked two twin rooms with 2 dogs for a stop over whist travelling to Devon . We were all very tired and although they don't usually do food on a Sunday, the lady owner offered to do some sandwiches or light snacks which we accepted very gratefully. It's the first time I have stayed in a hotel with my dog and didn't know what to expect. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the dogs were made welcome in the bar area which we took advantage of full advantage of and had a drink to toast my dad "happy Fathers Day,". Breakfast the next morning was cooked beautifully of which we enjoyed in a light and spacious dinning room which was very relaxing and a great start to our holiday in Devon. I thought the rooms and food were of a good standard and definitely value for money xx

Room Tip: Excellent polite service

This place is tired and a bit shabby in parts. However it's convenient, clean and comfortable. The parking, shower, TV and WiFi all worked, the breakfasts are excellent and the staff were all pleasant and helpful.
Management need to review their systems and/or tighten their controls. Arrival was supposed to be from 2.00pm. We arrived at 3.00 and our room wasn't ready until 4.00, when we finally got in there the previous occupants rubbish was still in the bin.

Great bonus that this hotel has free car parking - once we had parked up and checked in the car stayed where it was until we left the following morning. A walk into the town centre takes about 15 minutes and to the Montpellier area about 30 minutes. Our room was in the basement but still light and airy, was a good size with a large bathroom. All very clean, plenty of hot water and we did have a bath tub as well, however, I would say that the bathroom was somewhat outdated. Wifi was free and worked well and there is a very pleasant garden to sit in to the rear of the hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful and a nice breakfast was served in the very pleasant dining room. All in all a good stay.

There's nothing terribly wrong with the hotel, but the photos on the website do make it look much better than it looked to me in real life. Very smart use of lighting and camera angles.

The basement rooms in particular look old and tired with a faint but slightly odd smell that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

The cooked breakfast was good and staff were friendly.

The location is great for visiting the town, being a short walk away, with a pleasant stroll through the park nearby. No charge for parking, unlike some others. The room wasn't the largest, but you can easily pay more for B&B and get a lot less, at the price, even if had been a bit more, we would still have been quite happy.
Staff were very friendly. There is some refurbishment going on, which is good sign and the blend of the old building with modern facilites is being done well. Our room had a shower, might be worth checking if you prefer a room with a bath.
Breakfast was served quickly, friendly staff again. Will definately stay again.

Booked direct.

My sister & I stayed at this hotel for a few days to enable us to visit local gardens & National Trust Sites was a pleasant & enjoyable experience. Apart from discovering on arrival that our twin room was in fact a family suite on the top floor, which meant two double flights of stairs to climb to reach our bedroom or descend to reception, dining room, bar, or exit to our cars. However although we had doubts about family style room provided; management was exceptionally helpful in providing us with an additional lamp & table for separate single bed area & did offer us an alternative room for the following day on a lower floor. That after one good night’s sleep we declined. As quality of bedding, hot shower water, tea & coffee facilities daily replenished in our room together with the excellent breakfasts & an evening meal of top quality more than compensated us. Even with slight inconvenience of hotels current redecoration of upper staircase the politeness and helpfulness of all staff enabled us to enjoy our stay. An improvement would be if the hotel provided larger thicker towels & suggestion to check if future clients are elderly or disabled before they are booked into top floor rooms. The close walking proximity to city & safe parking within hotel ground was an added bonus to our trip.

Room Tip: Hotel is set back on a quite street so not aware of traffic noise, however If Stairs are an issue bo...
