Having just read the previous review mine is different. We also stayed in June this year and also had a second floor superior front room but on a Friday night instead of a Saturday. I'm not a very good sleeper and I was aware of some noise from traffic though we were luckier than the previous reviewer with revellers. I do remember thinking it might have been too warm if it had been really hot but luckily it was pleasant rather than hot that night. Our curtains were thick and padded and that helped with noise if not heat. It is quite a steep walk up the stairs to the 2nd floor too. The first floor rooms have much higher ceilings so should be cooler and though we didn't see them I would ask for a rear room if we went back as that should avoid potential noise problems. We would go back, the whole place was elegantly refurbished and the staff charming and helpful. The food was excellent and the location convenient.

Given all the good reviews about The George we were disappointed to cut short our intended stay from two nights to one. We had a second floor superior room at the front of the hotel and the Saturday night shouting and traffic did not calm down until well after 1am.

Yes the room was spacious, modern and clean. Yes the bathroom was luxurious. Yes the reception staff were friendly and attentive and Yes the breakfast was good. But if you are short of an hour or two of sleep you tend not to be so appreciative of these things.

External noise is of course very likely in towns (note to non-UK visitors, most of our town centres feature the quaint old British custom of getting drunk, shouting and fighting on a Saturday night), but if the hotel had spent a bit less on artwork and installed secondary double glazing, this would have helped a lot.

N American visitors might also suffer from the lack of any aircon. It got pretty warm in the room even on a moderate day outside. Also, be aware that the upper floors are quite a way to lug a heavy suitcase as there is no elevator.

We paid £130 B&B which we did not think very good value considering the above.

Other than that ....!

Used to live in Cheltenham, great job in Cheltenham, fell in love in Cheltenham, moved away from Cheltenham! Returned for a night of reminiscence. Fantastic location hotel for town and the gorgeous bars of montpellier. The sun helped - thought we were in Spain, but I would recommend hotel to anyone. Had a bigger room but the special 25% offer on currently made it really reasonable. Massive huge bath, great biscuits, hot choc and a robe and great room furniture. Only wierd thing was we kept getting notes under the door saying it would be so busy between 9.30-10.00 for brekky that they recommended we go down earlier!!!! Luckily we had a munchy at 8am - yes it is a very small breakfast room.

We booked a double room last minute for a weekend away . They emailed me back to confirm booking and upgraded me to a Superior room . The room was spacious with a luxurious bathroom ( recently refurbished) however if this was the superioir room I think we would have been disappointed with the double for the cost. Breakfast excellent and staff very helpful and friendly.

Just got back from a break in Cheltenham and a nice stay at the George. Fantastic rate of £330 including breakfast and dinner on one night. Dinner was excellent and not taken from a separate 'set menu'. Breakfast too was obviously freshly cooked with top quality produce. Location was good but would agree that front rooms could be a bit noisy. Decor is contemporary without being too much. Parking (free) was easy and the location is just a short walk to the upmarket shops on the Promenade and a few minutes from Montpellier, which is very smart. We also eat at the Daffodil, which is a fantastic venue, being a converted cinema. Very nice ambience but sadly food was a bit of a letdown on the night we went. Found a great pub near the Daffodil called the Beehive which I believe does good 'Gastro-pub' fare and a pleasant bar – Montpellier Wine Bar and Restaurant. Had a look in the Queen's Hotel which was a bit grim and had a drink in Hotel du Vin which was smart but, as always a bit smug somehow. I would recommend the George for its location, food and comfort, but particular mention to the staff who are all incredibly cheerful and professional.

The George Hotel was chosen in preference to the Queen's. I stayed in a Junior Suite (there isn't a Senior Suite by the way). The welcome from reception was outstanding and the room and bathroom of a high standard. Breakfast service was desultory but the food itself was good. The room faced on to a busy road and would have benefited from double glazing. Similarly the lack of air conditioning would be an issue in warm weather as opening the windows would not be an option owing to high noise levels. I glimpsed the interior of another room during cleaning. As a double it appeared rather small. Overall my stay was good value for money.

This hotel is perfectly placed for the shops in Cheltenham. We got a brilliant deal for £330 for 2 nights, full breakfast, plus a meal in the superb Montys right next door , with wonderful food , big surprise how good it actually was... The hotel is as good as you can want.. the people are friendly and the rooms are excellent. The bathrooms are like a dream. Parking is free and at the front of the reception, .. Try that in Bath, which was our first choice.
We'll be back there soon.. dont regard that rubbish about the staircase decoration, I didnt notice, It doesnt matter.
Test is, 'is it better than you expected' answer is very definately.. Yes.
