“Budget Hotel at exorbitant price”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2010

This hotel is 'award-winning' only in the budget hotel category. Standard rooms are simple to the point of being cell-like eg white melamine furniture with no luxuries like cupboard doors etc.

Had I been paying a budget price, I might have felt more favourably towards this hotel. The standard is about the same as a Travelodge - and when I've stayed in Travelodges and paid £25 per night I've been quite happy. However, in this case I had to pay £120 for a standard room.

Now, just like we all know that a punnet of strawberries always costs £1.99, but supermarkets put a label on them all year saying "£3.99, now half price", we also know that the 'rack rate' at a budget hotel should be taken with a pinch of salt. It just enables them to convince you what a bargain you are getting when they say £120 reduced to £59.

I only ended up staying at this hotel because one of the on-line room booking websites had messed up a booking made 2 months ago for another hotel and didn't admit their mistake until 1 week before my planned stay. As the Literature Festival was on, all hotel rooms in Cheltenham were full by then and so the Big Sleep took advantage of this and charged their rack rate.

Earlier in the week I had been staying in the Hotel du Vin for less and in considerably more luxurious surroundings, and so the very basic facilities of Big Sleep came as a shock. In addition, parking at HdV is free and the area is really quiet and yet very central.

By contrast, BS charge £5 for parking plus £1 per hour for parking earlier than 2pm check-in. Also on a Friday night you are treated to the shrieks of drunken girls as they pass by on their way to/from local pubs/clubs until at least 3am, with the constant background of the bass beat wafting across from one of these establishments as well.

I can say that the reception staff at the Big Sleep were excellent though - very friendly and helpful. So, if you can get a room at this hotel at no more that £60 per night, and preferably less, and you are planning on being out late yourself and joining in with the carousers on the streets, then this could be an OK place to stay.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Big Sleep in Cheltenham for one night on our way back from a week driving around Wales. We were originally going to stay in Hereford but could not find a hotel room, then I remembered that the Big Sleep hotel brand had a hotel a little further along in Cheltenham; after staying at their other hotels in Cardiff and Eastbourne we knew what to expect so when the receptionist told us they had no standard rooms for the night, only executives and a penthouse suite for £99, we decided to go with the Penthouse.
£99 for a penthouse suite at short notice, I'm sure you will agree is not bad but The Big Sleep is a budget hotel, even behind it's tasteful interior design and while the penthouse was a lovely, spacious and bright room with a huge bathtub and very modern furnishings it was not what one might expect of a penthouse suite in any other hotel.
We had no complaints though! The bed was massive and comfortable and the bathtub was the perfect place to unwind after a long drive.
There were signs that the hotel was getting a little tired and perhaps could do with a re-vamp or at least a lick of paint but overall we were very pleased.
Parking costs £5 and is located directly underneath the hotel. The spaces are limited and quite tight but it is secure and convenient.
We chose to dine that evening in a nearby brasserie called Monty's and would highly recommend it. The night we were there, there was a deal on cocktails in the basement bar which also featured a live acoustic duo who were fabulous.

The Big Sleep's excellent location enabled us to walk to an anniversary party a block away. It's the same distance from streets full of leafy Plane trees, banks, shops, cafes and interestic architecture. We found a super family run cafe/restaurant near the theatre.
The hotel offers great value for money and can be proud of its efficient, friendly staff.
The curtains were more practical than pretty, but otherwise, both the design and function of our room/bathroom were fine, interesting even.
Underground parking is an extra £5 per night.
Street carousing on a Friday night/Saturday morning was audible, but where is it not...?

Near the centre of Cheltenham the rooms are spotless and simple. It is an easy walk to shops in the day and the restaurants at night. Some road noise early in the morning.
Breakfast was self service but had large selection with juice, cereal, cooked food and toast/croissant. Parking under the hotel for £5 a day. Pity the internet cost about £2 an hour.
Sensible central budget option.

Would definitely recommended if you have taste and personality and would like to stay in a hotel with similar attributes.

Stayed over the Christmas period with my girlfriend.

Pros:
Location bang in town
Clean
Comfy
Unique Style
All rooms/entrance/hall have been fitted/furnished nicely to a high standard
Vending machines
Excellent continental breakfast bought to your room in a bag

Cons:
this may bother some people but the toilet door in my room was sliding glass that was frosted, so not sound proof.
I rang reception the day before and asked for a breakfast bag at a certain time the following day, i waited and it did not come so had to ring them up again in the morning.
Got a phone call on the check-out dot when i was leaving saying i had to leave now as the cleaners where on the way, that's fair enough but this may annoy some people.
Following on from my second point- The rooms are so comfy you will not want to leave.

This place is exactly what it says on the tin. No more, no less. Simple, cheap, clean. Good value sans the chintz factor which is a tad over-represented in the Cotswalds. While the beds aren't 5 star quality, you're not paying 5 star prices.

Stayed here for a week in June. Well located right in the centre in a quiet sidestreet. Room was clean, and was cleaned everyday. Tea/Coffee facilities in every room. Breakfast was nice albeit the seating area was a bit cramped. Reception staff were very friendly. Had free use of Fitness First in town. Wi-Fi was very expensive though.
