“Those tastes!”
Reviewed 7 December 2013 via mobile

A pre-Christmas treat with friends, lunch at this highly regarded restaurant.

A slightly downbeat welcome in a very small lounge but from the moment we were shown to our table(to be fair it started with the super canapés with our drinks) we were very impressed

I won't go through the menu as it changes regularly except to say that the lunch menu is very good value. More importantly, the flavours of the various courses were a delight.

We get used to appreciating tastes which are a combination of flavours, but what was impressive here was that although the merged flavours were lovely it was the ability to identify each individual taste which stood out.

The atmosphere lightened as the waitress relaxed a little. It was busy for a Tuesday lunchtime which demonstrates the popularity of the restaurant
which on this evidence is thoroughly deserved

“As good as food can be”
Reviewed 28 November 2013

Wow ! Had menu gourmand with my wife for diner. For someone used to dining in high end London restaurants a multi course meal of this standard for £85 plus £10 for fantastic cheese board is great value. I find it very difficult to criticise any aspect of the food and it is better than similar meals in London or indeed Paris. Highlights of .the meal were dexter beef tatare with corned beef, scallops with heritage carrots, megrim sole with squid and an amazing chocolate pudding. Each course was substantial unlike many other multi course meals. Wines were half bottles of Chablis and Clos du Val with a glass of monbazillac for pudding. Lovely attentive and personal service. Only downside was the empty restaurant but when the food that good who cares !

“Shame about the lamb.”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

A long wished-for visit as a birthday treat (it is expensive at £48 for two and £59 for three courses plus tip - the tasting menu is £85) was largely a great success, but for a couple of issues.
An amuse bouche of pumpkin panacotta with coconut foam was a delicate and well-judged couple of mouthfuls.Bread then arrived and was excellent-especially the brioche with bacon. For starters the scallops (two medium, sliced) with leek and a clear consomme were perfectly cooked in a fine liquid and the pigeon breast with pigeon pastilla and beetroot was the best I have ever tasted -cooked rare but meltingly tender. The venison with blackcurrant and salsify was just as tender with just the right acidity to the fruit.Lamb with sweetbreads, leeks and mushrooms held a lot of promise and looked great, but the lamb lacked real flavour and had not been trimmed effectively of sinew (at all?), negating the underlying tenderness of the meat. Both mains were small, not much bigger than the starters, with no carbs or sides available.
We skipped dessert and had coffee and petit fours .The standard coffee was underpowered, but the decaf was excellent .The petit fours (10 pieces!) were exceptional-we didn't miss a pud!
The room is slightly 'cold' and hushed in atmosphere, but the service is very good. Although one can't argue with the quality of the cooking,at these prices I left slightly disappointed overall.

“Put it on your bucket list......”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

Not sure why I haven't reviewed this place before as it is truly an amazing food experience, perhaps it's because it's so so serious - I do like a little humour when going out. However that said for food this is possibly the best place in England, so get it on your bucket list.

“Super, superb, wonderful, excellent - superlatives all round”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

This was simply a delightful dinner.
Special occasion with friends, celebrating a great couple of days out together nearby.
The food and wine were simply fantastic and this rates as one of the most surprising places to find in Cheltenham, which is not know for its cuisine.

Well it is now that le champignon savage is well established in the area.

If you are near Cheltenham - book now!

You will find delightful dishes matched with great wines.
This is simply the best meal I have had in the UK outside of London, by miles.

Do it, you know you want to.
