“Restful break”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

What a lovely hotel, staff really friendly and we had an upgraded room and it was great a king size bed a sitting area and a very large bathroom with a walk in shower a bath etc. we dined both nights in the restaurant and the food was very good and a good hearty breakfast both mornings. I will definitely be returning for another restful break. Thanks to all I know it's been taken over a short while ago and there are areas that money is required but it's the staff and ambiance that make it.

Room Tip: We had room 20

My partner and I stayed here for 1 night as part of a Groupon deal which included a 3 course meal in the Hotel's restaurant. Here is our honest review.

The hotel furnishings and décor are very outdated and well worn. However, in his response to reviews on here and in the 'information pack' in the room, it appears that the manager is keen to emphasise that the hotel has now become part of a wider chain of hotels and therefore, they are looking to improve it, which is no mean feat given that the hotel was a lot bigger than we expected, with a lot of rooms that will need to be updated/redecorated.

Our room was mediocre at best with a very well worn mattress that was rather uncomfortable (but a good size), curtains that were faded and badly ripped, wallpaper that was dirty and marked, very old furniture with some damage, and a very old, dirty, shower unit (though this worked well and was a good temperature). All of which can be seen in my pictures.

We found the food in the evening to be average and would have been disappointed if we had paid for it outside of the deal, though we did enjoy the main course. Again, the décor in the restaurant is outdated and the chairs are no longer very cushioned, however, get the right table and you have a lovely view out into the garden. After dinner, you can have a drink out on the patio, in the lounge area or in the bar.

Breakfast is a buffet style with hot and cold items and was of a good standard with items being frequently replenished.

Finally though, I would like to end on a positive note. The staff were simply a pleasure. They were all very polite, helpful and friendly (I particularly enjoyed the happy and upbeat manor of one of the waitresses). We had a quick and easy check-in and check-out and good service at breakfast and dinner.

With time (and I expect a lot of money) this hotel can be greatly improved and if I were to find that the rooms/bathrooms had been updated and modernised, I would not hesitate to return, though I would likely be eating dinner in the town of Cirencester which looks as though it has some amazing restaurants.

We went for a one day trip to Bibury, Cirencester (Cotswold in general). We found this hotel by chance. It was a very clean hotel, rooms were quite spacious. We stayed as 2 adults and one baby and the room was still spacious enough. Restaurant of the hotel was very chic. Hotel architecture is very good, it seems like an old building. Surrounded by trees and grass, it's a very quite and peaceful region. Hotel is quite close to Cirencester.

The only downside was the old style water faucet which has separate taps for hot and cold water, as in many places in England. So it is hard to find warm water, it is either hot or cold if iyou don't fill the lavatory.

Breakfast was also good and tasty. There are lots of parking place if you have a car (it's better yo have if you want to see around).

Anyway, i strongly recommend this hotel if you want to see Bibury, Cirencester etc.

We visited for afternoon tea, the service was brilliant, the staff so friendly and helpful, with such a selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones we were spoilt for choice.

If the rest of the hotel is as good as tea was, I should think it would be great place to stay.

Booked this hotel for our wedding anniversary. Having read the previous reviews we were slightly dubious but confident the stay would be nice as the manager seems keen on getting the place back on track.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful which always makes for a good first impression and stay. We were overwhelmed by the standard of the food served. The chef is clearly very talented and knows what works well within a dish. We've been to some top end places in London, and this come very close in regards to standard, choices and taste.
The operations manager (didn't catch his name) was very keen to talk to us and get some positive feedback (the manager was away for the evening) and he is passionate about turning the image of the hotel around. Yes, the interior needs updating, but its functional, updating will take time and there are parts of the hotel that shouldn't be renovated as it would spoil the quirkiness and history of the hotel. I wish David and his team all the best for the future!

Stayed here for two nights nice room a little dark creaking floorboards but nice bed. Thevrooms were clean and had all you need. Had to fiddle with the shower mixer water a lttle to hot. The place was quiet and had a nice garden but the rain stopped us sitting out there. The breakfast was good and plenty of it. We had good time here and its central to everything we would stay here again, this was a present from my daughter and it was worth every penny thankyou.

I have read previous reviews about this hotel and they were very mixed...... yes the décor does need a bit of updating but did not take away from the rest of our stay. The staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Food was very tasty, it was a special evening to celebrate my partners birthday. The room was clean and had everything you needed. The only down fall was we felt that some music being piped round the hotel would have been nice. It was very quite when sitting in the lounge, felt you had to whisper lol

Thank you for your kind comments, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us at the Stratton House Hotel. We do have music that pipes into the lounge so unsure as to why this was not so.
