“Perfect for a weekend away with the pooch”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

We wanted a short stay in a hotel that was dog friendly. The Falcon was perfect for this - great location close to loads of walks, and opposite from the green space at the church for the early morning/ late evening ablution-related canine requirements. There is a dog-friendly section of the pub, but it isn't separated away from everyone else so you don't lose out on the atmosphere. The rooms are clean and tidy - though we are used to a King sized bed, and found the double rather small. The breakfasts were delicious - my one reservation is that the quality of the food in the evening does not match the price (eg, £13 for macaroni cheese with a few flecks of smoked haddock, or in my partners case - vegetables boiled until they had turned grey) - though in general, this whole area is hugely overpriced in terms of eating out. The staff are very friendly, and make a fuss of the dog, and are very accommodating in dealing with requests.

.

In general Painswick village is a nightmare for driving, and even more of a nightmare for parking. But the Falcon is handily sited on the main road, near a public car park. So that's the first plus!

The outstanding aspect of this restaurant - we didn't stay, just came for lunch - was the service. I came with an elderly relative with Alzheimer's, and when I asked for the Disabled lavatory so that I could accompany him to help him, they told me that there wasn't one, but that they would take us to an unoccupied ground-floor bedroom where we could use the bathroom. Outstanding!

The table service was good too, friendly and professional.

The food was fine. Crab cake, hollandaise sauce, asparagus and quail's egg, bangers and mash. It isn't London food, and it isn't the Cotswold88 200 yards away in Painswick, but it was above average for a tourist spot. I was a little taken aback, however, when I asked for bread to accompany the meal (having to ASK for bread?), and then when it came it was, neatly arranged on a plate, 4 half slices from . . . a sliced loaf.

:-)

The décor was charming, olde-worlde but comfortable, with a fireplace. Just the sort of place to take foreign guests.

In fact, I suggest that you DO take foreign guestst here, for a lovely English experience.

Thank god for the falcon! I've lived in Painswick pretty much all my life and used to be a die hard regular of "the other pub"! I never really gave the Falcon a chance, until I couldn't take the behaviour of the land lord and land lady any longer! What a waste of my time and money! Oh how I wish I had just come to the Falcon earlier! The wonderfully welcoming landlord and landlady and the fantastic staff, make this the "only" place to go for food or a drink! Thank you Neil, Sue and team! Xxx

These days the prices at the Falcon represent good value for your money, accomodation and food.
Decor a little tired, but the lively atmosphere hides some maintenance needs. If you are lucky like we were, there's a Morris dancing cabaret show in the car park...

Room Tip: Grab a front room for a lovely view over the well kept churchyard.

To put it simply, a lovely pub in a lovely village serving excellent food and a great choice of beers & wines. I can highly recommend the fillet steak!

Room was very simple but comfortable, and the service from all of the staff was perfect throughout.

Would definitely visit again.

Checked into The Falcon for an overnight stop on the way back from West Wales. Lovely unspoilt coaching inn in an interesting village. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, our room was plain but comfortable with a King size bed and located in the quieter rear of the building. As a slight negative the en suite bathroom was very small and the shower cramped. Not unusual though in this kind of converted building. The food was lovely, with a comprehensive menu at reasonable prices. They also serve a nice pint of Hooky! The breakfast was excellent with fresh local ingredients. The Falcon is an excellent inexpensive B&B for a short stay or overnight stop. Whilst in Painswick, don't miss the fascinating Rococo gardens!

It was ok, had a ceaser salad for £9.75 and it was quite tasty but was the size of a substantial starter and the croutons had been cooked a week last Wednesday and were like bullets. Service was ok but all in all it was just OK and how a food venue like this can survive without an espresso machine when I can get an espresso from macdonalds. If this was a school report it would end with. Should do better.
