Wyck Hill House Hotel & Spa
Reviewed 13 July 2014 via mobile

I have stayed in period hotels have some have failed to inspire but not here. The moment we entered the hotel we were impressed. The reception staff were friendly and welcoming. We were allocated a room in the main house which had the wow factor great comfy bed and views to inspire!! We spent the afternoon on the terrace and exploring the grounds which were great. On the evening we ate in the restaurant. The staff were outstanding and the food was excellent. We also ate breakfast the following day. As someone who needs a special diet the staff catered for this without complaint. Wyck Hill made our Anniversary stay one to remember and we would like to say 'thank-you' you did yourselves proud and we will come back. Keep Room 28 free.

We have just returned from a two night break at Wyck Hill House and feel totally relaxed. The room (5) was spacious, quiet and clean, with it's own terrace looking on to the gardens and the bed was huge and very comfortable, we slept really well. All the staff were polite, friendly and could not do enough for us to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable. We dined in the restaurant one evening and the meal was delicious and the staff very attentive. The breakfast on both mornings was also delicious with plenty of choice and we were left to dine on all three occasions at our own leisure, unhurried. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return again in the future. Thank you.

Stayed here for a wedding, for which it is perfect, though it is so popular that it does mean that the advertised 2pm admission to rooms is needed for them to service them after the previous wedding party had booked out. This still gave us enough time to change, so was fine. The location is stunning with views across the countryside from the terrace onto which the bar and restaurant open. The bedroom was spacious but - a minor point - why do bathroom designers provide bath/shower controls that need a training course to understand them? The breakfast next say was freshly cooked and really good. Excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the ground floor of the main building

Stayed here for 1 night and my feeling are mixed, not sure if I would stay or recommend?
The good....
On arrival the reception staff were very helpful, very polite. We were directed to our room which was in the orangery, more on that later. We then went to have a cream tea which was part of the package we booked. It was delicious! The scones were perfect although not enough cream for my liking.
We then went to have a spa treatment, spa was nice and clean and the girls were really sweet, my massage was lovely although the next day my shoulders were very sore as I think she may have been a little rough.
After a quick nap, a walk and a shower we then went for dinner, we had the fixed menu included in our package, with 3 starters and 3 mains and a couple of specials, we had pork belly for our main which was very good. The restaurant staff were lovely, we did have to wait a bit for our food but when it did it arrive it made up for it!

The bad
As mentioned we were in the orangery, which sounds a lot nicer than it is! In reality it's a building a little way from the main hotel which was slightly annoying as it was pouring with rain when we went for dinner and we didn't have a umberella. We found it very difficult to sleep as the floor outside the room is tiled and every time someone came in with heals it was very loud.

The ugly
The bathroom.....
Was disgusting! It was really dated and mouldy, was dirty, the floor was filthy, there was hair in the bath, the loo was cracked, there were holes in the wall, you have to be rather slim to fit on the loo as the gap is tiny but the worst of it was when my husband took a shower it suddenly went scolding hot, to the point he screamed. When he came out his back was red raw.
This isn't what you would expect from travel lodge let alone a hotel of this price!

When we went to check out there was also things added to the bill we didn't have and it took a while for them to sort out so if you do stay check your bill thoroughly.

On a plus side the breakfast was great although they don't replenish as often as they should.

So I probably wouldn't stay again although I may have a meal in the restaurant or use the treatment area.

I think for the money you pay they need to up their game to compete with other hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the orangery although not sure what the other rooms are like

Myself and my sisters wanted to do something special for our parents Birthdays so we decided a stay a this hotel would be an ideal gift.
The hotel was breath taking on a arrival (I drove our parents) and the check in staff were so polite and obliging.
We were checked in swiftly and directed to the room. The room was absolutely stunning and very very clean. I would without a doubt recommend upgrading to a feature room as it made the whole experience that extra bit special.
My parents said how lovely and warm the restaurant was and the food was fantastic.
They both slept like babies and said they wished they could stay another night.
We will definitely be visiting this hotel again.
A final big thankyou to the staff, my parents keep saying that their friendless really topped off the whole experience. They also said this is one of the best hotels they have ever stayed in.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a feature room if you can.

We stayed at this hotel for a 3 night honeymoon and unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. Although I'd mentioned that we were on honeymoon when booking there were no little extras on arrival.

Our room was in the main part of the hotel, room 30 and we had countless issues with the door as it wouldn't lock. This was reported a number of times but didn't ever seem to be fixed. The most irritating thing about it was the attitude of the receptionist. It was just rude. This was the main issue throughout the stay, the staff, particularly reception did very little to offer any kind of service.

When we arrived we were told the restaurant was full, there was no attempt made to accommodate us. I'd definitely recommend booking the restaurant (and spa) prior to arriving to avoid disappointment.
The bar lacked atmosphere, and often a bar man!! Which meant it was hard work finding someone if you wanted a drink.

The bedroom was ok, though dark as had no main light. The bathroom was small. All furnishings were tired and in need of an upgrade. There were no tea/coffee facilities in the room. Instead you had to phone reception and they would send someone up. This was a pain first thing in a morning if you wanted a drink before getting up.

The plus side -the food was of good standard and eating in the conservatory was very pleasant. We used the spa facilities and the staff there were friendly.

I would say after reading other reviews that this hotel is very inconsistent. It has so much potential but unfortunately doesn't live up to it. Primarily due to the attitude of some staff and the dated interior of the hotel.
