“Fine but overpriced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2009

My boyfriend and I stayed only one night in Fosse Manor - we booked last minute for the night. It wasn't our first choice, (other choices were booked out) - I was hoping for something that was a bit different/special, and unfortunately Fosse wasn't really what I'd hoped for. It was fine - we negotiated a discount on a deluxe room (as it was last minute) which was nice, it was very big, with an extra room and three beds in total. However, being a couple, we really didn't need the extra beds and I would have liked the deluxe to be of a higher quality, rather than just a bigger room. It was simple, basic, clean, but the fittings etc were a bit cheap and didn't have the expensive 'luxury' feel that you would have expected from the price tag. There was also a bit of a smell to the room and the toilet didn't flush properly.

Staff were nice if a little sleepy for breakfast in the morning. And I was pleasantly surprised that breakfast wasn't too big, although it was a bit slow in coming.

It was in an excellent position - very close to Stow on Wold which we liked - we had dinner at the old butchers which was very nice.

All in all it was a 'fine' stay - it wasn't fantastic and I probably wouldn't go back, because in truth, for the price tag I did expect more.

we ( a holiday paid for by myself as a present for my partners birthday ) had looked forward to this 3 night trip for so long and it was so dissappointing i had upgraded to a top of the range deluxe room which costs £230 per room for the thursday night and £275 per room per night for the friday & saturday nights, for 2 people for bed breakfast and evening meal, ( a total of £780) although quite large the room was so dissappointing in its decoration & furnishings, it was painted from top to bottom including the ceiling in a very oppressive brown colour best described as a colour like brown packaging tape, the room was located on the front of the hotel and being on a main road could be quite noisy from the passing traffic, ammenities (toiletries etc ) were very limited i have stopped in £ 25 per night bed and breakfasts that have offered more, i had to ask for a sewing kit, it was as though they were trying to cut back and cut costs, the water went off twice on both saturday & sunday mornings leaving me in the shower covered in soap for 10+ minutes, not something you would expect when paying these sort of rates, and i wasnt the only guest to complain as other guests had also lost there water supply, apparently the receptionist informed us this was a usual occurance but they had had trouble locating the problem, with regards to the food in the past recent years the hotel claimed to have won country life magazine best restaurant in the cotswolds, heaven help the cotswolds if this is the best restaurant they have, the food was best described as nice basic food but dressed up, made to look very nouvo cuisine, but a pity it didnt taste as good as it looked, a menu unsucessfully put together in terms of complimenting tastes and flavours, you are only given a £27.50 per head allowance, which wasnt really adequate enough, and there was only 1 menu available which didnt change and was the same menu for each night, breakfast in the morning was adequate but certainly not ample, one morning i asked for bacon egg and beans, the portion was more akin to a childs portion with one small rasher of bacon one small egg and one spoonful of beans it could of all fitted on a saucer, one afternoon i had an afternoon cream tea, the scones resembled burnt offerings black more than brown with a biscuit crusty like exterior.
to sum up a very expensive stay for a very poor service. certainly couldnt recommend it and deffinately wont be going back.

We arrived at Fosse Manor on 26 Jan 09 and stayed for three nights on their winter warmer deal. When we arrived we had been upgraded and shown to a fantastic room with a very large sleigh bed and the most fantastic roll top bath. Nothing was too much trouble and the whole place had such a good ambience about it. Staff were very helpful but unobtrusive. The food was fantastic both at breakfast and dinner. We could not fault this stay in any way and we are quite fussy when it comes to staying in hotels. Only wish we could have stayed longer. I have written to the hotel expressing our sincere thanks for a wonderful few days and I would not hesitate to recommend to friends and family. We certainly hope to return again. Well done to you all at Fosse Manor.

We arrived at Fosse Manor on a Saturday afternoon on the third leg of our 3 day visit to the Cotswolds. We had only booked a room the night before while staying in Moreton-in-Marsh (The Manor House Hotel). The lady on reception was very pleasant and gave us a quick tour of various rooms, both in the main house and two in the annexe. We opted for the ground floor annexe because it had a lovely patio area with great views out over the fields and beyond, and away from the traffic on the main road out of Stow. The hotel is a little out of town but still within walking distance so we decided to park up for the day and go for a wander. Then we spent the late afternoon reading on the patio before moving on to dinner in the main building. I think there was some sort of function on because the bar was suddenly very busy but we managed to find some seats and had a very nice pink gin while looking over the menu. Again the restaurant was busy but it created a happy buzzy atmosphere. The food quality and service was very good and we took our time just enjoying the meal and working through a very nice bottle of Rioja. It was nice then to leave the hubbub of the main building and disappear to our very quiet room and wake to wonderful views in the morning. Breakfast in the morning was again very good with very attentive service and check-out fast and straightforward. Overall a very pleasant end to our trip.

  • Liked — Great views and good restaurant and bar
  • Disliked — slightly close to busy main road, but not really an issue

We have just come back from a 2 night stay at Fosse Manor and it was fantastic. The service is wonderfull, the staff are very attentive without being overbearing. We're both fussy and we never have any problems there at all. The restaurant is very good and they always accommadate my food allergies. We have been twice before and we intend to return again.

When we stayed at Fosse Manor it was the first romantic break/night away my husband and I had shared since the birth of our daughter 3 years before, so expectations were high. Luckily we were not disappointed.

The location of the hotel on the outskirts of Stow was great as this is an excellent base for exploring the Cotswolds. We stayed in a deluxe room that boasted a sleigh bed and a large bathroom with a roll top bath and walk in shower that was glorious. The room was also beautifully decorated and tastefully furnished. We enjoyed a delicious meal in the hotel restaurant where the staff were attentive and helpful.

We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to others and have in fact already done so. We hope to return ourselves in the future.

Stayed here over the New Year. Great service, helpful staff who were not obtrusive. The food was excellent, nothing too much trouble. We stayed in a coach house room (superior double) that had views to the countryside, complete with patio that would be great in the summer. Highly recommended - and I'm not the easiest person to please!
