“our hideous experience in the Kings Arms Hotel Lunch on 1st Jan 2014”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

This was the worst food and had to wait 45 mins the rolls contained scraps of meat which could have been anything. The chips were white with blackspots on them. As far as value for money we paid £8 95 each for this debarcal.. It was embarrassing we had brought family out to Stowe and were looking forward to a pleasant lunch.

I stayed in this ancient inn with my daughter for two nights. Our room, which was very spacious, had a really old fireplace, uneven floorboards, leaning walls and beautiful old brickwork but also all mod cons and a lovely, newly-fitted bathroom. The hotel is perfectly placed in the centre of Stow and has limited parking. Breakfast was only OK, not helped by having to be brought up 2 floors, but acceptable. All staff that we came into contact with were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: We had the only twin room (Room 5) which was large and comfortable, and very quiet.

This is a lovely place to stay if you're visiting the area. The pub is over 500 years old and full of quirk and charm, plus the staff are friendly and helpful.

It couldn't be more central to the shops and restaurants in Stow-on-the-Wold and also has a small amount of parking - a tricky thing to come by in Stow.

The staff we spoke to were all Stow residents, so were very helpful recommending restaurants and giving directions to other villages.

We stayed in room 5 in the main building which was large and airy with a beautiful stone fireplace in it. The bathroom was small but modern with a hot and powerful shower. All the floors and walls are wonky (a nice thing, in my mind) and plug sockets are located in odd places but that's only to be expected in a building as old as this.

Whilst the kitchen is on the ground floor for some reason breakfast is served upstairs, so our food was not as hot as it could have been but it was perfectly nice.

If I went back to Stow I would definitely stay again.

Stow on the Wold was a delightful surprise. The Cotswold stone is so beautiful and all the buildings are just so impressive. The best part of our visit was our stay at the Kings Arms Hotel, originally a 16th century coaching inn. Low beams, completely uneven floors but totally refurbished. We had a beautiful room upstairs on the second floor room with fireplace which was beautifully furnished and had the most comfortable BIG bed, and modern en-suite bathroom. We had a home cooked evening meal downstairs in the pub that was delicious and the atmosphere was very cozy. In the morning we had breakfast in the second floor dining room, just steps from our room. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I only wish we could have stayed longer. Hope to return.

Room Tip: We had a couple of rooms to choose from. The 2 story cottage in the back that was very charming and...

Thank you for your lovely review, we are glad that you had a wonderful stay with us even though it wasn't for long. We think that the quirkiness of each room, gives a more individual feel to your stay and each room is different, whether it be uneven floor boards or low ceilings.
Please if you are ever in the area again, stop by and see us and maybe this time a longer stay.

We arrived on a Friday evening and were greeted by the very friendly receptionist and shown to our room.

We stayed in one of the cottage rooms out the back which was beautiful, clean and had suitable amenities.

The breakfast was included and the selection was excellent.

Overall, great value, superb location, good beers, good food. Perfect.

Can't wait to go back!!!

The kings arms is easy to find and the central location couldn't be better. The car park to the rear is handy and the staff can direct you to it as it's not so easy to find.
Unfortunately when I arrived I waited 15mins at an unmanned reception before having to go on the hunt for someone to check us in! I understand it's a busy place but it's not the best start to a £108 a night stay.

The room itself was well decorated and the features of a 500yr old building are really nice...loved the steep staircase and windy corridors! But unfortunately what comes with such an old building is extremely thin walls. This made for a really awful nights sleep - if it wasn't the floorboards creaking above the room, it was the rooms next door opening and closing doors. You could even hear the neighbours entire conversations! The person in the room next door had the tv on full blast til 3am and snored all night long...it felt like he was in the room with us it was that loud! Obviously this mans sleeping habits are not the hotels fault but if you're a light sleeper, this hotel probably isn't for you!! The facilities in the room are good though and it was lovely and clean. Great views across the square.

The breakfast is served til 9:30 and we were greated with drinks. We helped ourselves to buffet fruit and toast which was nice and fresh. We were quite taken aback however when the waitress then literally threw a piece of card at our table as she wandered past - not even explaining that it was in fact the hot breakfast menu! Not great service from her, she was grumpy and definitely did not give us the service we expected for £108 a night.

Overall a lovely spot but we felt disappointed that we had such a poor nights sleep and the staff service was below par. Unfortunately, I wouldn't stay here again.

We stayed last week for 2 nights mid week. The hotel room was cosy, clean and although we had to climb some steep stairs it was well worth it for the view of the town.
Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
We ate in the bar on the first night, I had a Meat Pizza and my girlfriend had the Cornish Sole from the specials, both were excellent and extremely good value.
Breakfast was served in the restaurant, had a good selection available and great Full English.
Will definitely be back in the future.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 9 but if you don't want the stairs ask for rooms on the first floor.

Thank you for your review, we are glad that you had an enjoyable stay with us. We do have people saying that the stairs are too much and we can move people, if we have the room. It can be quite daunting looking at them from the bottom, but once at the top you have stunning views from the rooms. This all adds to the character of the building we think.
If you are ever in the area again, please do not hesitate to come in and see us.
