We recently spent the weekend at the Grapevine Hotel and part of the deal included dinner on one of the nights. We originally booked the restaurant for both the nights of our stay but after the experience of the first night we cancelled the second booking. Our table was booked for 8.00pm and after being seated at our table we were basically ignored until they took our orders some 30 minutes later (the restaurant although busy was by no means full). Another 15 minutes before our starters arrived and aside from the small portions, were adequate. The main courses were also disappointing with the vegetables being cold on one of the orders. Also although 2 of our party ordered fish dishes, no fish knives were supplied, which is somewhat surprising being that the restaurant boost 'fine dining' Dessert didn't fair much better, with cold custard accompanying the jam roly-poly. When we queried this with the waitress, she had no idea as she was from 'a sister restaurant' and went to ask the chef, however as we were now the last diners in the restaurant, the chef had left! Finally, to add insult to injury, the 'House Red' that we had ordered, which happened to be a bottle of Merlot and we were shown a bottle of Merlot, turned out to be a more expensive bottle, however as we were not asked to sign for the wine at the time, we were unaware until checkout.
