“Excellent weekend getaway!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2012

I and my wife have stayed here on several occasions and it really is a wonderful place to get away from it all. Set on the edge of the Cotswolds it would be a great place for avid walkers to stay.It is a gem of a place with a well stocked bar, particularly if you like real ale. The restaurant is also brilliant and each time we have stayed we have not come away disappointed. The rooms are well decorated and the beds are very comfortable.

After reading a few other reviews I can agree that it is fairly expensive and I will agree that the cancellation policy is awful. My MIL fell ill the day before we were due to arrive and there was no question of us staying here, the only way we were able to save our money was to re-book on another occasion. Not the best and pretty unsympathetic but such is the nature of business nowadays.

All that said; the enjoyment of our stay means we will definitely book again, sometimes it is worth splashing out for the odd weekend to get away from it all.

Friendly, efficient and welcoming service from all the staff who made us feel completely at home and always looked after. Delicious food in the restaurant, and great bar meals by a real log fire.

Beautiful location - couldn't ask for a better place to go walking or relax in the hotel garden, and just get away from the stress of life for a few days (with Cheltenham just around the corner if you fancy a bit of shopping).

The refurbished rooms are tastefully done (apparently the last few rooms are being done at the moment) and match the high standards of the stunning public areas.

Last week we stayed for 2 nights at this great hotel in a super location. The staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough to help.

We stayed in the annex in a lovely large room with a very comfortable king size bed.

The restaurant facilities were great and we enjoyed afternoon tea, evening meal in the restaurant and the full breakfast with an extensive choice.

Room Tip: THe main hotel has the old fashioned quaint rooms but they are on the small size. The rooms in the a...

This lovely hotel set in the middle of Rodborough Common is perfect for walkers and those who like good food.

The hotel has been decorated sympathetically. Our room was immaculate (if a tad small) and the bathroom spotless. Our only bug bear was that we overlooked the road as opposed to the Common and we thought this might be noisy but it wasn't at all. The hotel was full (always a good sign) so we were unable to be moved but in the end it didn't matter.

We ate in the restaurant - great food (small portions - so make sure you have the 3 courses) but beautifully cooked and very tasty. The staff were very attentive and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere with soft background music.

We went for a lovely walk on the Common - the views really are great and made us appreciate what a beautiful country we live in.

We love the Cotswolds and would definitely stay here again.

Thankyou for taking the time to provide us with feedback following your recent stay at The Bear. Should you decide to visit us again, please feel free to request a larger room away from the road - we will be more than happy to accommodate you whenever possible.
With regard to the restaurant portion sizes, we do offer complimentary side orders of extra vegetables with all main courses (as stated on our menu). In light of your experience however, perhaps this is not sufficiently prominent and is something that needs to be addressed.

Rooms and Hotel appearance: The Bear is a classic Country Hotel; the rooms are nicely furnished, the bed was very comfortable; but TVs need updating as picture quality and sound awful!

Food:
The breakfast is really very good; they make their own museili and have their own local honey ... great breakfast selection cooked to perfection. This is really the best bit!

If you have a meal in the evening stick only to the menu of the day because it seems that this is the only food freshly cooked ... confusing with al la carte being same price as daily menu sheet... whats that about? Meals not on daily menu tasted dry and stale or reheated perhaps? Restaurant manager needs to consider why the restaurant is empty most of the time... try menu of the day at £21.00 per head and you will get what you want, more people to eat there??

Bar food was pretty poor, quality of food terrible and very limited.

Staff: Special mention to the hotel manager who I personally found very helpful; the housekeeping staff also good at their job. However, restaurant staff need a little more training on the customer relationship as they made you feel like just a table number! Morning staff serving the breakfast a litle better. Bar staff friendly enough serving drinks but could not deal with my complaint of the bar food which was stale.

Room Tip: Room 6 was not facing road and quiet. Nice view of the garden and grounds but don't forget to cl...

Thankyou for taking the time to review your stay with us at The Bear. It is only with constructive criticism that we can work to improve our service.
With regard to your dining experience, I can assure you that none of our food is reheated, or anything other than freshly prepared. The purpose of the "daily menu" is to offer our guests a greater variety of dishes at the same standard as our A la Carte menu - hence the same price. We feel the current restaurant prices reflect the quality of the food and service offered.
I regret that some aspects of your stay did not live up to your expectations and can assure you that your comments have been passed onto the relevant departments so that these areas can be improved.

I stayed in a single room for 1 night and whilst the bed was clean I found that overall the room could do with a good hoover. The food in the bar was good and breakfast delicious but a word of warning the shower pressure is extremely powerful.

We booked one of the hotel's special offers - jug of Pimms and cream tea on arrival, dinner in the restaurant on one night, bed and breakfast. After checking in we made our way to the bar and were given a huge jug of pretty strong Pimms with tons of fruit. The cream tea consisted of 2 fruit scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam. More than sufficient for me but my companion ugraded to a "full" cream tea" for £2.95 and was given a range of sandwiches and beautiful lemon sponge cake in addition.

We upgraded to an "executive" room for a mere £20 and had a good sized room with far reaching views and a king sized bed. The windows opened - hurrah!! Plenty of tea/coffee/chocolate making supplies and nice toiletries. Very quiet and no complaints whatsoever.

We ate in the restaurant and the food could be described as "interesting". Not totally sure about it. My starter of goats cheese, potato "thing" and tapenade was completely cold and would, I think, have been better served hot. My main course was served with "mediterranean vegetables" and they turned out to be 2 grilled cherry tomatoes, 2 ribbons of courgette and 6 slices of cold sweet pepper. Not quite right...... My companion had a trio of lamb - with no vegetables......

There was a good choice at breakfast and no problem with asking for extra tea, toast, butter etc. However, I agree with other reviewers that empty plates tend to hang around. By the end of breakfast we still had cereal bowls and main course plates stacked on the side of the table even though waitresses had walked past us loads of times.

All in all a very good stay in a fantastic location - although we will probably stick to the bar menu in future.

Thankyou for taking the time to review your stay with us at The Bear, I am pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable stay overall. I am however, disappointed that your evening meal did not live up to your expectations and can assure you that your comments have been discussed with our Head Chef.
With regard to the lack of vegetables, we do state on our menu that complimentary side orders of vegetables can be requested from your waiter.
Your experience at breakfast highlights a training need that we are addressing. Thankyou again for your comments, we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
