Took my mother here for a long weekend / this space isn't big enough to catalogue the list of problems - rooms not together as requested at the original booking - you could here every noise from the rooms above you / dinner booked for second night no record of booking had to wait until someone left from an earlier sitting - food awful -lamb arrived blue and pork pink and so it went on - would suggest anyone staying here -location is lovely -take ear plugs and eat at the bar where staff were so much more friendly and accommodating. As at the time of writing I'm still waiting to hear from the hotel re letter of complaint (now one month).

General M, General Manager at The Bear of Rodborough Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 10 October 2013

I was extremely disappointed to read your comments on trip advisor, following your visit to The Bear, especially as your letter dated 10 September addressed to our Head Office, was passed to me, as General Manager of The Bear, and following an investigation on the points you raised, I replied to you on the 19th September – a copy of this letter has been sent out to you in the post again today.

Your room allocations were clearly an error on our part, for which I apologise most sincerely, together with the misunderstanding regarding your Restaurant booking.

As for the comments you made regarding dinner, whilst there can be no excuse for the problems you faced, you were not charged for your meals. You were also compensated on departure for any inconvenience caused.

I am therefore very disappointed that you have now chosen to put such a scathing report on trip advisor. I am just delighted we have had so many wonderful comments, which hopefully will keep potential customers well informed.

Just returned from this lovely hotel and cannot fault it. Friendliest staff I have come across in a long time, Beautiful decor and spotlessly clean throughout. Excellent food for breakfast and evening meal. I could go on and on!
If you love beautiful scenery and walking, it is on your doorstep.
We would definitely recommend it and will be going back again.

Room Tip: We were upgraded to room 26 with a four poster bed. Absolutely beautiful. Noise is not a problem at...

Stashed just one night on the autumn deal which included DBB and a half bottle of champagne. The champagne was waiting for us in our room on arrival in an ice bucket with plenty of ice so it kept well chilled until we were ready for it. As we were only staying the one night we had booked a bijou room this was quite cosy but nevertheless beautifully presented with a modern wet room and I would have been happy to have stayed here longer. We ate dinner in the library restaurant which was very good as was breakfast. Staff were all very helpful, friendly and efficient. Location wonderful for walks on Rodborough common with it's stunning views. Hope to return again.

We have just returned from a visit to the UK and our last hotel was the Bear Of Rodborough.

We spent three nights at this hotel and overall were very pleased with our choice.

It is located quite a way from Stroud, which we were aware of. I did notice a few comments regarding the access to town. Without a vehicle it would not be viable tp walk in to Stroud. However for those wishing to walk around the coutryside the Bear is ideal.

There are outside tables and attractive nooks to enjoy thoughout the hotel. There is a vineyard tasting room with an extensive variety of wines (examples from most of the recognized wine growing countries).

We ate all meals in the hotel. The two we had at the bar were of good quality and very generous. The service with good, particularly one young waitress but unfortunately I did not get her name. We also had one meal in their formal dining room which again was good. All breakfasts were included in the room rate and of high quality. Nice selection both hot and cold plus delicous marmalade and organic jams.

Our room was on the second floor and the view was pleasant although not expansive. The four poster bed was comfortable and the furnishings elegant. We did however find the noise level was unusually high with peoples movements quite audible. On night a fire door came open and was blown against the exterior of our room. The staff did fix this problem quickly when notified.

There is extensive parking at the hotel. However the access is not ideal for those travelling with cases. We had been away for a month and had several heavy suitcases. It was not easy to move them from the carpark to the hotel (up stairs no ramps that we located). There is no way to transport luggage except manually and therefore be aware if you ask for a view (and therefore have an upstairs room allocated) your luggage will have to be carried up flights of stairs. When we arrived there was a gentleman that we assumed would help, however a young girl was left to assist and while she was gracious I felt she struggled under the weight of our bags. (They were over 20 kgs). As we left a man arrived to help which we felt was much more appropriate.

All in all this is a nice hotel, slightly out of the way but with benefits worth the drive. It takes a few mintues to get to the shops but the view, the atmosphere and the general location were lovely. We would book a stay here again and definately recommend it to other travellers.

Room Tip: We enjoyed our second story room, but found transporting our luggage hard. The view is pretty and p...

A return visit to this delightful hotel set in the splendour of the countryside around Stroud.
The hotel has an Olde World feel to it but deserves a good reputation for it's friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food that it serves. Nothing is too much trouble.
My room was light and airy and overlooked the common. The bathroom was clean and functional and the bed was comfortable.
This hotel is well placed for visitors to the Cotswolds.
A visit to Bin Ends situated in the main car park is a must for the wine lover. There is a wealth of knowledge in the staff that work in there, and for guests staying in the hotel a 10% discount voucher is available for wine purchases.

Room Tip: For views, a room overlooking the common is advisable.

Had a great time here for my mum's surprise 70th birthday treat, the hotel did not disappoint at all. Lovely, well decorated and comfortable rooms, fab breakfast, great dinner in the restaurant and staff who were very attentive and welcoming.
I hadn't over emphasised that it was a special occasion, yet Anne the General Manager noticed us opening cards etc in the lounge and had a card and chocolates sent up to my Mum's room and had arranged a bottle of fizz for us at dinner. a lovely thought and topped off a fab 2 night stay. our party of five thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and its surroundings.
will return again.

During my stay nothing was too much for the staff and the food was to a fantastic standard. The room was very comfortable and very clean too! I would heartily recommend this hotel which has great access to the Cotswolds and also for the peaceful atmosphere too!
