First time for us here - on a short break (not from each other I must add). Decor is very tasteful and staff were very helpful. As with most hotels the extras cost a fortune so we avoided most of them. The room (#7 in the older part) was clean and tasteful with a pleasant view over the croquet lawn. The bar area is classily rustic with plenty of little spaces to make it cosy and private. Bar food was good, restaurant food rather expensive, so we passed. Breakfast was very pleasant - in the extremely tasteful restaurant, however portions were somewhat nouveau cuisine - ONE SMALL sausage, ONE rasher, ONE mushroom!!! and HALF a small tomato !!!!! as part of my cooked breakfast! At least there were enough beans to make counting them too difficult :).

Room Tip: Ask for a spacious room not facing the road.

We stayed for 2 nights this month as part of a large Group. The rooms in the new part, on the first floor, all had interconnecting door which could be used as a family room. HOWEVER the door was very flimsy and you could hear the conversation/television of the people in the next door room. This was particularly noisy first thing and last thin. The room was quite small but clean.

The Restaurant was excellent both nights and the staff on the whole generally helpful. We thought the room was expensive for what it was, although the bed was comfortable. Both my husband and I suffer from back problems.

Breakfast was excellent, although service could be a bit slow depending on which waitress you had.

If we lived locally we would use the Restaurant but the bedroom with the inter connecting door was most unsatisfactory from a noise point of view.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main hotel are small but may be quieter.

Its a year since we got married here, so returned for our anniversary. So glad we returned, the food is still to its extremely high standard. The atmosphere is cosy, relaxed and very welcoming, the staff are friendly and professional. Location is perfect for walks and the hotel being dog friendly is a huge bonus. We will definitely be returning year on year if they keep to the same high standard.

We are just heading home, after two nights here. It is a lovely, cosy place situated in great grounds. It has a great feel to it, as well as bundles of character. Staff are nice. Breakfast is lovely, as is the cream tea.
However inside the hotel, we both could not get a phone signal. Internet would not work, niether did the free WIFI.
Inside our room, the duvet cover had holes in it and the two armchairs were heavily stained!
What shocked me the most was, in all my years of booking travel deals. I have never tried to change my double room into a twin room and been told not only is there a charge....BUT it is £20 PER night extra!!!
Overall it was a pleasant experience.

Stayed for 2 nights. Room clean although rather small! Ate in the Bear Bar, very nice meal. Staff are very friendly and helpful. I can recommended this as a good location when visiting the Stroud area.

We visited The Bear for Sunday lunch. The staff were friendly & attentive. Unfortunately we found the food somewhat disappointing.

We both ordered roast dinners and we found that out food was swimming in gravy, roast potatoes were soggy, the apple sauce (with the Pork) was drowning in gravy. We couldn't understand why the gravy and the sauce was pre-plated.

In addition, the range of vegetables was limited and somewhat bland. On the plus side, the crackling was superb.

In conclusion, a lovely setting, quality front of house staff. Sunday lunch needs looking at.

I stay at this hotel when I am in Stroud for work. It's an old building which is full of character and a hotel which I really enjoy staying in. Breakfast is really nice and the service is good.

In my few stays here the only complaint I can have is that the service for food in the bar can be below par but generally when they are very busy. To be fair they dealt with the problem with our order well so that is good. Food tastes nice though and not too pricey.

I will continue to return here.
