“A Fabulous Place to Celebrate !!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

We have recently come back from spending a wonderful weekend celebrating a very special 60th Wedding Anniversary with our parents. We stayed as part of a package which included dinner, bed and breakfast plus afternoon tea. The food did not fail to impress and was superbly presented and cooked. The staff were extremely courteous and were always on hand to answer any questions. The rooms were delightfully positioned and very comfortable even down to the free half bottle of champagne and chocs awaiting us on our arrival ! We upgraded the special couple's room to a four poster bed which just added to their joy and surprise ! Afternoon tea was absolutely scrummy and such a treat. Would love to return for another weekend away soon !

Recently stayed for a long weekend as an early birthday/anniversary treat. From the moment we walked in I knew we were going to like our stay. We stayed as part of a package that included dinner, bed and breakfast and also afternoon tea. The food we just couldn't fault it all nicely presented and well cooked. We were lucky to receive a room upgrade and the room was spotlessly clean, spacious and included a really comfortable four poster bed.

The hotel is quirky but this all adds to the pleasure of staying her. It is in a lovely position on the common with nice walks great views and free roaming cows!! All in all we had a really nice stay and wouldn't be afraid of recommending this hotel and we will definitely returen

The Bear of Rodborough is a lovely hotel near Stroud. Such a pity the some of the staff let the side down! Like 'forgetting' to change the barrel and bring the drinks after happily taking payment and then being defensive when questioned! Or getting the broken hook in the bathroom fixed as promised....

We've just come back from a very nice holiday in the Cotswolds staying at the Bear of Rodborough Hotel. The hotel in general has a quaint 'oldie' feel about it which has some interesting twists and turns of corridors adding to the unique feel of the place. On Wednesday afternoon when we arrived we were attended to by Martina who was cordial and friendly and she offered to help take our luggage up to our rooms. Also, because my father has problems with his knees and my parent's room was on the 3rd floor, Martina kindly changed their room to the 1st floor. The room I stayed in was in the old part of the building which came complete with a bath and shower attached. The bed was comfortable although they should really have had a thinner duvet during the warm/hot summer weather! The room had a good standard of cleanliness although just a couple of minors:- The water from the basin taps would sometimes take a long time changing from hot to cold and vice versa although the water from the bath taps were fine. Also the walls between my room are pretty thin as a couple of nights I was woken up by someone snoring from next door!

We mainly dined at the Bear Bar where the food was cooked well and tasty - I would personally recommend the Sea Bass and Quiche of the Day which were both delicious. One thing I couldn't quite work out was why the Battered Haddock, Burgers and Steak were always very large portions (a bit too large in my opinion), yet the Sea Bass, Fishermans Pie etc. were moderately sized helpings. Perhaps it may be an idea to offer both large and medium portions of the Haddock, Steak and Burgers. The waiting and bar staff were friendly and attentive and they took interest in the walks we had been doing during the day as well as providing a good service with our food and drink. On the last evening we dined at the Library Restaurant to experience The Bear's 'Haute Cuisine' dining experience. The food was cooked well and very enjoyable but because the portions are fairly small I would recommend choosing the 3 course option.

The hotel is situated on high ground between Minchinghampton and Rodborough Commons with some lovely views through the bedroom windows especially when the cows congregate on the grass in the mornings! The only slight downside about the location is that it isn't actually in a village - Minchinghampton (a fairly large village) is located over 2 miles away although Amberley which has only a very small Post Office / Convenience store is 1 mile away. If you wanted to go into town then it appears that there are few buses during the day to take you to Stroud which is 3 miles to the north, so you would need a car.

Overall we were able to do 3 different country walks straight from the hotel which take in some lovely scenery, woodlands, streams and hills. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Bear Hotel the other people especially if they enjoy hill-walking.

Room Tip: Ask if there are north or west facing rooms available - My parents had a west facing room which had...

Stayed here for two nights at the end of June for a wedding. We had our dog with us and stayed in room 40 in the annexe. The room was smallish, but very nice, with a huge and extremely comfortable bed, and a great view.
We ate in the bar on the first night, which was good, the steak pie is delicious !
The breakfasts are amongst the best I have had, great choice and beautiful quality, really good.
The location is quite unusual, in the middle of a large common, which had roaming cows, real English countryside !! I don't think there is much else around it, but Stroud is only 5 mins away.
The main hotel part is very old, lots of quirky little steps so probably not great for anyone with mobility problems. Surrounded by lots of grounds, a croquet lawn and outdoor seating areas.
I would recommend and when in the area would certainly go back, if only for the breakfast.

Room Tip: Rooms in annexe are for visitors with dogs.

It's fabulous! I'm a fussy traveller who really notices detail and they get it so right here. Charming staff could not be more helpful. Location is stunning - well worth getting up a few minutes early to take a stroll in the morning. Food is fabulous - freshly cooked and arrives quickly, great fresh squeezed orange juice and good coffee. Rooms have super comfy beds, great pillows, duvet and linen, making for a comfortable night. For once a hotel I can't fault!

We booked this hotel to celebrate my birthday and our wedding anniversary - we did a two night package with free upgrade on room, afternoon tea & dinner in the restaurant each night.
Everything from the minute we arrived was excellent. The staff could not have been more friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
The setting is amazing - just on the edge of the common which is well worth a walk across to see some of the views and wild flowers.
We will book again and have no hesitation in suggesting you give it a try :-)

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the new wing rather than the main hotel - quiet and more spacious.
