If you have had a good lunch then maybe you don't need an evening meal at Brewer's Fayre. The buffet looks tired and sad and dried out under the hot lights. If it's just a snack you need a 3 minute walk to Tesco's (next door) will get get you a wide variety of goodies!

Took over 40 minutes from ordering to serving of food.

They had run out of mango chutney for the curry even though there is a Tesco next door! They didn't say they'd run out until asked where it was. Waitress not bothered that meal was not as advertised.

Manager did reduce bill and provided free coffee after we complained about wait.

I don’t know where to start with this one. I seem to remember it opening about 15 years ago, and we had a family meal there – the food was awful. Being aware that many such places frequently change management, we went back maybe 5 years ago; still awful.

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter and I had to grab lunch and, at 2:30, there is a very limited number of places still serving. So I thought what the hell, it won’t kill us, one last try at The Old Nelson.

I’m pleased to report that, no doubt in line with a policy of continuous improvement (read “increasing profits”), the food is actually even worse than it was before.

I honestly don’t know how they do it. A blind man, with no sense of taste or smell, using only grass clippings and a rolled up newspaper as ingredients, could produce tastier food.

We sampled the carvery. Tomato soup was available as a starter – thin and watery, I suspect it was made from “Cup-a-Soup” type powder – and not enough powder.

The meat was utterly, utterly tasteless, as were the potatoes and vegetables. We couldn’t eat much of it, so forced some down and left.

The staff are trained to a high level of professionalism, poor things – all fixed smiles and good manners. It would be great if they were working in a decent place.

Avoid at all costs.

Booked in for a sundial lunch for 8 including 2 children. All pretty good:

- friendly service (waitresses charge about a bit though so watch out).
- nice carvery and salads.
- unlimited coffees.
- nice atmosphere.

Good every day lunch out especially with children.

I've dropped into this place from time to time over the last 20-30 years or so for the odd meal, and it still hasn't quite got it right.
The building is handsome, the decor is bright and cheery, there's plenty of room, the food is filling and well cooked, if you've got kiddies it's a good place to take them, there's plenty of seating outside and it's just opposite Stratford Park.
But. The food is just completely average, cooked to a standard format. To my mind, the worst part is having to stand in a queue at the bar to order, whether it's drinks, drinks and meals or just meals, or even to pay, because they don't put enough staff on the tills (on the busy Sunday we visited, just two). I thought this sort of thing went out with the Ark. Beer prices are OK, but a large spritzer will knock you back about six quid!
Toilets are grubby - the gents' doors inside and out were very dirty and grubby, even the windows were grubby. And when oh when are outfits like this going to realise that someone coming round with a phony smile asking 'Is everything all right with your meal' just gets your back up? It does mine.
