The entrance and stairs up to the rooms are off-putting. The door is unwelcoming, yet next to us there is a lovely entrance which is unused. The walls up to the first floor are dark and in need of decorating. Once beyond this, the impression improves but all walls could be improved with a lick of paint and some pictures on the walls. This is an old building with narrow corridors so the lighting should be improved. Our room had a good-sized bathroom, with toilet, sink and shower. There was no shelving so our toiletries sat on the floor. The shower was difficult to operate as the dial for changing the temperature wouldn't shift at first; once we'd moved it, the shower had sufficient power. The bathroom was clean and I would use it again. Our bedroom was a little cramped, because it had two singles joined together. It needed hooks on the doors, a fresh coat of paint, a lamp both sides of the bed and at least one picture on the walls, which again looked in need of a lick of paint, especially as the bedheads weren't attached to the beds and were scratching the walls whenever you moved. The beds were comfortable and although we looked out on to the main road we weren't disturbed by traffic and slept well.
The owners of the b and b were friendly and helpful. The cooked breakfast was good. The coffee tasted great but we would have liked a pot so we could have had top-ups more easily, rather than having to look for the host to have our cup topped up. Cereals were available but no yogurts or fruit. However, at £60 a night you can't expect luxury. Importantly, everything was clean and the owners were friendly and obliging. The decor lets them down and you get the feeling the owners are comparatively new to this enterprise and might benefit from sleeping in the rooms themselves. I wasn't given the chance at the end to say how I found my stay, otherwise I'd have told them about the niggles with the bathroom. They should perhaps have a feedback form. Despite my criticisms I wouldn't avoid staying there again; I didn't feel fleeced for the price which provided enough breakfast and a good night's sleep.
