“Brilliant pub but avoid the busiest times if you want to eat”
Reviewed 25 May 2014

How can the same pub get 5 stars and 1 star from reviewers? As a (fairly) regular customer I'm happy to tell you. It's in a brilliant spot above the Slad Valley, and retains genuine atmosphere as well as superb views especially from Laurie Lee's favourite spot in the corner of the Snug. A very good selection of nice ales, helpful and friendly staff, and a real attempt to provide quality food, all make the Woolpack a corker on its day. The downside is that at busy times (summer weekend nights, bank holidays etc) the food has a tendency to run out, the young and inexperienced staff get over-run and out of their depth, and the food itself can suddenly plummet from its usual high quality. Go anytime for a pint. But if you want to eat, and enjoy this great pub at its best, go mid-week and you *probably* won't be disappointed.

“A proper pub with super tasty food and excellent service.”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

The Woolpack is special, very special. A good ol' proper English boozer where everyone chats to everyone. You could easily spend hours drinking fine ales and eating hearty food cooked to perfection. The view is mesmerising, you can see why poet Laurie Lee spent most his time here. And the service was excellent. Hannah, the landlady surely runs a tight ship. We could've quite easily spent hours there... i'm sure we'll be back!

“Good food/drink, lousy service”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

As some other reviews have noticed, the service here leaves a lot to be desired. But the mussel dish, once I finally got it, was excellent. So 5 for food, 1 for service, equals a 3 (average).

“Poor service and attitude of the staff”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

We were looking forward to a decent pub meal after our walk. We were told they would not take orders for food for 10 minutes. The person next to me had already been told to come back and order food after 10 mins, so for them this would have been more than 20 mins before ordering. We left and found another pub a short drive away. I would not recommend this pub as they should have been prepared for serving customers meals at 2pm. This is an amateurish outfit.

“Very poor experience. We won't be back”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

Not dog friendly. When trying to order food, we and others were told to come back in ten minutes. A great shame following a great walk in a lovely area. Fortunately a short drive provided a much better experience.
