“Autumn Colours Spectacular”
Reviewed 22 November 2011

One of the "must see" places not part of National Trust or English Heritage. Since it is all about trees the timing is important to see the greatest range of natures gifts. Yes a bit pricey but it is a "one off" unless you are local and there's lots to see in the vicinity.

Catering is expensive so take a picnic.

There are two separate walks and we covered about 8 miles in all. The "Old Arboretum" has a ban on dogs but the "Silk Wood" has dogs everywhere. Try to cover both since they are slightly different in lay out.

Don't forget the camera, and clothes to cover every climatic contingency.

“Can get much too busy”
Reviewed 21 November 2011

Six of us took a trip to Westonbirt on a Saturday afternoon in October in the hope of seeing the autumn colours. It was my sister's choice - she's a bit of a botany freak - and she and her partner, my parents and me and my husband tagged along.
I felt that the entrance prices are high at £9 per adult (varies by season) though Mum got in on a disabled discount with my step-father as her 'carer' for free.

The woods are wonderful - I can't knock them for variety and range - but on this particular day it was about as crowded as an Ikea store on the first day of the sales. Getting photos without bodies in was a bit challenge and the peace and tranquillity we'd hoped for were just not possible.

Basically it's a big wood with marked paths. To be honest, there are hundreds of woods with parks in the UK and I didn't feel that Westonbirt was 'special' enough to justify the costs.

Dogs are allowed on one side of the arboretum and not on the other. Paths are pretty good for pushchairs or wheelchairs and are mostly quite flat. Catering and other facilities are somewhat limited.

“Guided walks”
Reviewed 15 November 2011

The guided walks are expertly done but some assume a fair level of interest and knowledge; choose the specialist events with a little care. Catering is OK for light meals and snacks, but plan a main meal elsewhere. Be sure to get a map; sometimes handed out at the entrance, sometimes requiring to be found in the Great Oak Hall. Walking sticks/poles/staves beneficial for less-than-vigorous walkers - some in the gift shop, but limited stock near the end of the season.

“A great place to walk”
Reviewed 13 November 2011

It is one of my favourite places on earth - a wonderful parkland. The entry price is a bit high, but you forgive it as you know it will cost a hell of a lot to run this place. If you live locally and plan on visiting numerous times a year, become a member as it will save you money on entry.

“Early Autumn Colours”
Reviewed 10 November 2011

My husband and I visited the arboretum towards the end of September this year. There are over 3000 trees there and visiting at any time of the year is a must, as the changing seasons all have something to offer. The colours in Autumn are truly amazing and this was our third visit to this wonderful place. The arboretum is just a short drive from Tetbury which again is something not to be missed. We have not yet managed to visit the arboretum during the Spring, but hope to do so in the near future.
