“Lovley food, miserable portions”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2014

We had the market menu. First course was a single raviolo (calling it ravioli was a bit of an exaggeration), managed to get 3 mouthfuls out of it. Main course was duck - 2 strips, about 6 mouthfuls, with a tiny bit of foie gras, and a vegetable. Thank goodness for the bread. I'm sure a semi starvation diet was good for me, but would have liked to have had the choice. For the money (ok, we were on a deal), it probably worked out about £5 a mouthful. Felt distinctly short changed, even on the deal.
However, what we had was delicious.
Service a bit OTT, but no doubt some people like having their napkins folded for them when they get up for a moment. For me, it was a bit intrusive.
All very nice, but not an experience I would repeat.

“For a Michelin starred place - nothing exceptional”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

Quality is all about comparison. Sometimes it is given objectively (Usain Bolt is quicker than Tyson Gay); more often it is by a subjective experience and unlike with science the event can never be repeated. Therefore, it might've been an off day but nothing wowed me from the kitchen or the service team (very different to the exceptional hotel service - reviewed separately).

I am lucky to have eaten at dozens of starred places - and whilst the food is always at least good, it is the service that makes the difference. Generally you feel loved - here it was competent, no more. To give some examples, the restuarant offers corkage, which is great. if you are confident in choosing wine, then you can bring a fabulous bottle, for what you end up paying for a very good bottle from their comprehensive wine list. We brought one, and that was acknowledged as we sat down for our canapes. When we went through to the restaurant, we had the amuse bouche (star dish of the meal) and then we waited and waited and waited. We had to remind them and it only came just at the same time as the first course. The wine glass was warm from being washed. And at the end of the meal, the waiter came and just poured the wine (with potentially all the sediment) straight into the glass. They have a fantastic selection of brandies (both cognac and armagnac) and I wanted to chat over these with someone who knew them - the best the waiter could do was show me the bottles.

We arrived at 7.45 for canapes and champagne. Had those and we got taken through at 8.15 for the meal. The amuse bouche arrived at 8.25 - we then had 6 courses in an hour and 15 minutes - felt really rushed. None of the portions were large, but did leave feeling fullish

The food was fine - but there was no dish where I said I want to eat that again and again. There was nothing that really made me sit up and take notice.

We are talking about the highest levels here - but other one starred places (Kitchen, Northcote) do give you all of the above.

“Excellent Relaxed Sunday Lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2014

Elegant and comfortable public rooms and dining room where we enjoyed a first rate leisurely Sunday lunch. It started with a relaxing pre-lunch drink in the comfortable lounge bar studying the extensive and varied wine list and menu over canapés. The amuse bouche and post meal petit fours served with coffee in the elegant lounge with a large roaring log fire were nice touches. Although we were there for Sunday lunch the food was mercifully very far removed from the often sorry Sunday roast that is commonly presented and rarely better than you might cook at home. Here the food was comfortably better than even the most accomplished home cook might present on Sunday (unless they are Michelin starred chefs in the week). Excellently executed and presented this was Sunday lunch as good as it gets. It may not be cheap but for the quality it is excellent value for money. The staff were efficient and courteous, their level of service adding to a most enjoyable visit.

“Good middle of the road fare”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2014

We were wedding guests and as such were very pleased indeed with the food and the service but then so we should have been because this is NOT a cheap establishment. The staff were all well trained and very friendly and obliging and I would recommend 'Lord of the Manor' for a wedding reception. I'm really not qualified to rate the establishment from a purely gastronomic point of view because a wedding reception, in my opinion, is really a different occasion from that but suffice it to say that if we were in the area again we would certainly be quite keen to 'give it a go.'

“Lovely dining experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2013 via mobile

My fiancé and I very much enjoyed the 7 course dining experience with every plate of food being delicious. The evening was started with tasty cocktail in the bar and topped off with a cheese board. Every course was spaced out perfectly and washed down with a great South African! The only negative was that some of the waiters were clearly in training and lacked full English language understanding but we would definitely go back for more!
