“Historic Inn”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014 via mobile

This is beautiful pub accommodation. It is an historic building, pleasantly quirky, with small, but comfortably furnished rooms. The staff are friendly and very helpful. There is no cooling or TV in the room we stayed in, but free Wi-Fi. We liked the tilted doors and the vintage Micky Mouse in bathroom, revealed in the 2011 renovation.

The bar is comfortable with a good restaurant. In Winchcombe you are spoiled for choices when it comes to good restaurants.

This was an enjoyable stay.

We stopped off for a night on the way back from a wedding. From the moment we approached the front door we were made to feel welcome, with nothing too much trouble. The owner has refurbished very elegantly and has obviously chosen her staff well - attentive but not obtrusive, helpful but not pushy - it felt like a place where we were already known (as we doubtless will become).

Our ensuite room (number 2) was simply but comfortably furnished with a splendid bed and bedding, a well equipped and quirky bathroom (mind your head) and - how nice - cards and a scrabble board in the room in case we wanted to while away some time before dinner. It overlooked the road outside (busy during the day) and was above the bar so if you fancy an early night you might ask for a quieter room at the back - but given that we didn't retire until the bar closed it wasn't a problem.

The service we received from the 20- and 30 - something bar staff was among the best we have had anywhere in the world. Seriously, these guys seemed almost to sense what we needed - from leaving us alone with the menus in the snug while we chose right through to bringing a last digestif over at the end of the evening, we felt unrushed, undisturbed, but looked after.

We ate our evening meal in the bar by choice (there is a separate restaurant room) which was filled by a few unobtrusive locals; the food has been described by others elsewhere but was top notch with a good choice. I would not be surprised to hear that Michelin had paid a visit - but I rather hope they don't as the food and wine were both fairly priced and the 'pub feel' was part of the charm.

We breakfasted there too - perfectly cooked with quality ingredients and just the right size - and had managed to park the car opposite the hotel (no charge after 6 on a Saturday or on a Sunday) - although the council car park behind the hotel looks safe and easy to use.

We had a walk around the small town / large village of Winchcombe before we left - we could have walked a few miles on established paths if we had brought our wellies - and were back in Bristol less than an hour later. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 overlook the road and are above the bar. Not a problem if you plan to stay up all even...

Although we only live 10 miles away, we had never been to the Lion, but inspired by the Trip Advisor reviews we took two friends along with our two girls aged 6 and 9 after a trip on the nearby heritage railway.

We were not disappointed. Good choice of ale, which was well kept and proper cellar temperature. Great welcome on arrival and a table in the corner of the bar, which was ideal for a party with kids.
Fantastic seafood platter for sharing and then all but one had the Sunday lunch roast beef, which was top draw, slightly rare, very tender with a great selection of vegetables and yorkshires my Grannie would have been proud of.

I had the seafood risotto, which was a great lighter option and would have graced the table of many of London's quality restaurants.

Wine list was good with much of interest. We chose a Uraguayan red. Very high quality and if their football team is as good, England have a real problem in the upcoming World Cup!

The quality theme continued with puddings and coffee, and throughout, service was attentive, well balanced and not intrusive.

To sum up, we felt The Lion was a great find on our doorstep and we're looking forward to going back very soon.

Just a quick review of the food, which was absolutely top class, the starters were superb, so good I had three and left out the main course (Which itself was very good) Michelin Star soon I would expect, compares well with 2 and 3 star in London. Accomodation was very good as well, comfy beds, not too soft

Our first time eating in The Lion and will be back as it was a 5* experience. The building has been beautifully restored and furnished with much care. Fine details have not been over looked down to the lovely jug of fresh flowers on our table. We have so many average dining experiences recently but this was not one of them.We only know of one of restaurant in the area that cooks to this standard. toilets are often a big let down but The Lion's are spotless with attention to detail. The food was just wonderful as was the attentive service.Well done to all the staff at The Lion and so glad we have found this gem.

Beautifully restored Inn, situated in a delightful Cotswold village. Rooms are pleasant, spotless and comfortable. You can live without a TV for a night or two, good wi-fi available anyway.

Meals have always been delicious and when one main was undercooked the problem was swiftly and efficiently dealt with, including no charge. The restaurant and bar both welcoming and full of character. On a fine day the garden is a pleasant place to enjoy a drink or two.

The friendly, highly efficient service is the star, they even posted my wife's jeans (left in room) and declined offers of reimbursement.

Highly recommended
