Staying in Portsmouth whilst working in the area, place was very clean and serviced well. proprietor and wife nice people, Very dissapointed about inflexibility of breakfast - a cold sandwich would have done - but nothing offered for my 6.30 a.m. start..
Parking: in reality three spaces available to first come - first served - one visitor actually damage his car trying to access the restricted spaces. There is on- road unrestricted parking - that again seems subject to first come - first served and is very quickly taken post fiveo`clock-ish. Is a good mile and a quarter to any `civilized` shops or eateries. Short term - fine - long term `tedious!`.

Good location for exploring Southsea and Portsmouth. Big advantage of off street parking. The Sea Angling club over the road is worth a visit especially if you have children. Owner very helpful.

We visited Portsmouth, England for 4 days in December; 2nd trip for my husband, my first. After much research, picked the Esk Vale Guest House for lodgings. The owners were quick to reply to my many questions via email. After flying into Heathrow, we took a National Express coach to the main Portsmouth station, called the Hard Interchange. I booked all our coach trips online prior to our visit, as we did not want to be bothered with having a rental vehicle. A quick taxi ride later, we were at Esk Vale. One of the owners greeted us and we checked in. They do not accept credit cards, which is clearly stated on their web site, so we were prepared with English pounds. The rate of 50 pounds a night, for 2 over 60's, was reasonable and included breakfast. We received our own key to the front door as well as one for our room. Our room was directly off the hall, as I had asked for one with a minimum of stair climbing. Although the room was very tiny, it was spotlessly clean, including the small but functional bathroom with lots of hot water for the shower. Tea and coffee service were provided in the room, as well as soap and bod wash (not always provided in England). No walking around room in the bedroom, but that was okay with us. There is a bus stop about 2 blocks up the street, a pedestrian only shopping and dining area within about a 20 minute walk, and a very congenial pub/restaurant within a 10 minute walk. The breakfast room was downstairs, with your choice of cold cereals, porridge, or/and a cooked breakfast. As I don't care for cooked tomatoes or the sausage, i was able to modify my breakfast order with no problem.
We spent the first afternoon/evening walking around town, then the next two days took buses to various areas for touring. The owners Three days later, we got a taxi to the station and caught our coach to Leeds for the remainder of our trip. We very much enjoyed this trip and highly recommend Esk Vale to singles, couples, and small families.

My son and I stayed at Esk Vale recently and were warmly welcomed by Andy even though it was past the usual check in time due to some travel delays. The rooms and showers were clean and fresh and really good to look forward to after a tiring day of travel. There was the usual flat screen TV and tea making facilities so that was nice. The next day, Maria served us a wonderful full English breakfast. Esk Vale is in a nice area near the sea front. It is easy to locate and has its own enclosed parking area and close to the sights. I would recommend this B&B highly and certainly look forward to returning again from more than 6000 miles away (from Singapore).
