“Great hotel, close to everything!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

I am leaving this review following our 2nd stay at The Royal Maritime Club hotel, we had stayed at this hotel previously to check it out as we usually stay in Gunwharf Quays itself or Southsea and liked it, this time round we stayed with friends....cannot fault.....hotel is clean, close to everything and the staff are very friendly.

First time we stayed (April 2014) we had a standard double room, was basic but clean...all you needed was there (does need a bit of TLC), the only issue was that it was road facing and was extremely noisy with traffic even throughout the night. This time we paid an extra £10 and upgraded to a newer style room....100% worth it, room was lovely, exceeded expectations (and we had requested NON road facing, so no traffic noise).

Two of our party had single rooms, these were again, small and basic and in need of some TLC (only one of the two rooms had a full length mirror...which guest was slightly disappointed about), but clean and if you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel close to Gunwharf Quays, is a great find!!

Breakfast was LOVELY, self service and plenty of choicel!!!!

We are already planning our next trip to Portsmouth and we will 100% be looking to book this hotel as will our friends that stayed here also.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and upgrade room and request NON road facing.

Friendly helpful staff. They know the area and history of the hotel. Perfect for our trip. Hotel is very clean and comfortable. Lovely soft beds. Hot showers and fluffy towels.
Would love to stay again.

We were booked in here via work for a 2 night stay, looked ok from the brief look of a picture I managed on the way to Portsmouth and on arrival I thought nothing of it, from the outside looked ok and in a good location, took us 10 or 15 minutes to park and this is a major issue probably not just at this hotel but also others in the area I would imagine, anyway we checked in and the checkin staff and all who work there are very polite and courteous, got to my single room and although being very clean and reasonably spacious was somewhat a throwback to the 80's yes the 1880's but served a purpose, breakfast was self service and reasonably ok with quick and efficient staff, if I was paying I would expect more for my money but I will not be returning mainly due to the parking situation and the antiquated interior of the hotel

Arrived at the hotel and there was nowhere to park, eventually located an underground car park across the road (wasn't signposted on the way in) and parked there at £10 per 24 hours. On discussing with the car park attendant he advised that the hotel would stamp the parking ticket and we would get it half price - Result! Hotel looked impressive from the outside, and very olde worlde on the inside. Staff were very polite and helpful, and reiterated the parking arrangement. On arrival to our family room, we found that our 8 year old son had his own room, separated by the bathroom which was great. On closer inspection, the wallpaper and paint was peeling off the walls, the carpets were filthy, the windows didn't fit properly and surprisingly opened fully (didn't think hotels were allowed windows like that above the 1st floor), however it was a godsend as it was so warm we were able to open all the windows for a through draft. On a plus point, the beds were very clean and comfortable, and the bathroom was clean. Breakfast the next morning was very good, plenty of buffet style cooked food, cereal, toast, yoghurts and fruit. All in all, a little expensive for what we got, but it was within 10 minutes walk of Gunwharf Quays for shopping and eating, and 5 minutes from the historic dockyard.

This hotel should be oozing all that old fashioned charm with its nautical theme and fifty's style lounge. But this is overshadowed by the fact that it is rather dirty and definitely in need of some TLC. If I had paid £40-50 for the night I would have accepted it, but at £90 I expected something a bit more upmarket. The breakfast was OK but we had to wait as the dining room was full and they kept running out of stuff on the buffet. And there are only about 6 parking bays so you will have to pay for parking elsewhere.

Stayed for 1 night West wing. The room and most of the public rooms where absolutely boiling hot. No fans available and some of the windows would not open. Room was ok single beds fairly comfortable, Service ok bur nothing special good bar wide range of drinks and good prices. Breakfast plentiful but a bit tasteless. This is a nice idea and as a club for mariners it makes a lot of sense, as a full paying guest I would probably plump for a budget chain hotel. Brilliant location but doubt if i will be using it again.

Room Tip: Avaide the west wing in the summer

An interesting place .. Quite 30's in style. Teeny tiny lift. Rooms were quite roomy and stylish and clean. No personal laundry facilities which makes it difficult for international travellers. Breakfast was quite nice. An older style accommodation but quite pleasant enough.
