“Friendly, nice room, great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2013

We stayed here one night (24 October) and very much appreciated the friendly welcome. Our room was more than adequate, clean and comfortable. The washbasin was, indeed, on the tiny side but the shower was a comfortable size and again, everything was spotless. Arrived too late for dinner, but enjoyed a drink in the bar. No problem parking, and no noise from the pub or street (which our room looked onto). We decided to stop by the restaurant a few days later, on our way back to France, and were glad we did. The burger and the mixed grill were both excellent: quality ingredients, freshly cooked and piping hot and extremely generous (too bad, really, no space left for puds!). Would definitely go back (lots more things on the menu to check out!). Also very well placed for the seafront, dockyards, etc. and in a very interesting area to wander around.

Check in was good with friendly staff, Room was adequate for a couple of nights stay even though the bathroom was very small, the beds very comfortable and room clean on arrival. The pub downstairs is your usual food led establishment although we didnt try anything it looked decent grub. As stated the location is fantastic with lots of places to visit nearby, especially the Sally Port area 5 mins walk away full of history. Only criticism is that our room wasnt touched after the first night so had to use same wet towels again, but not something that would stop me stopping there again. Overall a decent place to stop at a reasonable price.

The location is excellent for old Portsmouth and the historic shipyard. Parking is on the street but they provide a free pass and it is a relatively quiet street in a nice area.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The bedroom was an ample size, comfy beds and clean. The bathroom was small to say the least! Shower could have done with an upgrade to tidy it up and a slightly bigger washbasin would have helped!
The pub itself was really nice, pleasant atmosphere and although I didn't eat there the food looked good and was certainly popular as was packed out on the Saturday night!
Overall would stay again for the location and price, maybe just improved bathrooms next time!

We stayed two nights (5 & 6th Sept).
Positives:The room was small, but provided all that we needed and great location with easy walk to the Historical Docks. We had a comfy bed and shower en-suite. Staff were friendly and made us welcome. The pub food was excellent value, in fact the portions were too large.

Negatives:The remote for the tv was missing; we advised the staff immediately yet nothing was done to replace the remote. We were told they would try to move us to another room, but they were fully booked so obviously couldn't. We didn't make a big deal of it because we were in Portsmouth to visit the town, not watch tv.

All in all, very good value for money.

Room Tip: We had room 10, which is at the top of the building with a view over the roof tops. We could leave t...

Stayed for 2 nights at this place and was disappointed at the state of the bathroom/toilet. The room was comfortable clean and warm but the bathroom had mould spots and the toilet was dirty and we had to buy bleach to put in this to clear the dirt. The shower although warm was in need of update the shower back boards were covered in dirt and mould and slippy to exit. The extractor fan was noisy and we could hear the other residents moving above and next door. The staff howeve were amenable. The place was closed on sunday when we arrived and we were told that all facilities could not b accessed until the next day for a pub this was very poor. We could not get a breakfast only from a nearby cafe which was expensive but the meal we had in the pub was lovely and well presented and cooked. Think the owners should make sure that the toilet and bathroom area is clean and presentable. It was in a good locality however and nearby to our places of interest. The outside of the pub was being refurbished by contractors and a shame that the inside was not. I would not recommend to friends saying that the information provided was not detailed enough. We thought that the price we paid did not reflect the accommodation we expected and that this pub was trying to compete with a market that provides accommodation. There was no one to ask to make enquiries and the place always seemed lacking in staff or was closed. Because we stayed there only two nights it was bearable but would not use again.

Room Tip: Find rooms with double glazing to counter act the noise as this was a main road hotel and very noisy...

a good choice for cheap central overnight accommodation. an easy flat walk to all the portsmouth attractions and located in the picturesque old town and a couple of minutes from the sea. I wouldn't have liked to stay longer though, as the room was small and the shower room was tiny - we had a little tv on the wall and tea and coffee so it was fine for overnight and for the price. I would defy anyone to have a proper wash or shave in the miniscule cloakroom sink. We took the breakfast on Sunday morning, which was excellent value and quality. All the staff were extremely friendly and the pub was not overly noisy or late on Saturday night so we had a decent night sleep.

Stayed 2 nights from 29 August and enjoyed our stay. The pub/hotel is ideally situated near Old Portsmouth so is easy to walk to the main Gun Wharf and shops and all the usual sightseeing stuff in Pompey. The rooms were extremely small and we felt like living in a shoe box but the bed was really comfortable and the shower worked well. Didn't try the food at the pub but it was the usual pub grub style. If you travel into Southsea try bar / bistro 69 - it was fabulous. Also try the ABar Bistro at 58 White Hart Road. For a great breakfast try the Spinnaker café in Broad Street - note - this is not the one under the Spinnaker Tower!

Room Tip: The tv remote control in Room 11 doesn't work - so if you're a tv freak - bad luck!
