I stayed on 11th August 2014 with the intention of being in Portsmouth for 4 days trying different hotels each night. So that I could choose one for the future. Duke of Buckingham was easily the best! As soon as you walk through the door you can feel the friendly atmosphere, on this particular day there was a man behind the reception. Full of smiles and very approachable. There is information at the desk about Portsmouth and very helpful guides. You are given a key to your room but to the building also. So you can come and go as you please. Reception closes at night but you are very reassuringly given a number to call if you have any problems. Parking was excellent, you are given a permit and can park in the area. I have mobility issues and found it easy to park at any time of the day. The room I stayed in was on the ground floor of the cottage just behind the hotel, toiletries were supplied, tea and coffee services, ensuite bathroom with one of the most powerful showers I have ever used! Beds were extremely comfortable, I was worried about being able to sleep due to the problems I have but the bed was exactly what I needed. Everywhere was clean and looked lovely. Quite honestly one of the nicest hotels I have been to and the fact it's practically smack bang in the middle of the city was amazing. I am going to be travelling to Portsmouth weekly in the future for post graduate study and there is no doubt I shall use Duke of Buckingham. I am a very happy customer indeed :)

First impression was of a very helpful lady at reception, she greeted us with a smile and was keen to make sure we had everything we needed for our stay - couldn't have been more helpful.

The rooms are quite small, but worth bearing in mind you are paying a lot less than hotels in the same area. Whilst small, the rooms were clean, well arranged and completely met our needs.

Had breakfast in the pub the next morning which was very good. All in all a very pleasant stay, would recommend to a friend and would stay again if needed somewhere near Portsmouth city centre

We stayed in a cozy small double room on the top floor with a good size bathroom and compact shower, everything was very clean and there was coffee/tea facility in the room. Staff was friendly and helpful.

There is wi-fi only at the reception area or at the pub. The corridor floor was a bit noisily and I could hear every time someone walks.

Location is great with some great transports links and there is some amazing places for a meal in a five minutes walk.

We had stayed here a couple of times in the past, both times in the "Garage & House" at the rear of the pub and on the ground floor. Both times the rooms were lovely and quiet which suited us perfectly, as we live in a very rural, (quiet), area of Norfolk. We booked this trip back in January 2014, for our son's Masters Graduation, on 17/07/14, and requested a quiet room at the time of booking. On this occasion we were placed on the first floor, directly above the pub, to the rear of the building, with a very noisy cellar type, air conditioning unit right outside our window on the flat roof, this coincided with it being the hottest couple of days of the year so far. All of this resulted in the room being far too hot with the window closed, and far too noisy with the window open!
All this said we still had a great time and managed to get some decent sleep with the aid of some ear-plugs that we purchased from a local chemist shop. The room was small, functional and very clean, with everything you would expect at this level. The toilet / shower room was the same with seemingly unlimited hot water. The staff were friendly & helpful and the only reason we did not request another room was because it was the second week of graduation and we knew that the Duke was full, just like all the other accomodation in Portsmouth. The noise did not spoil our stay and we would not hesitate to stay here again in the future. Thanks to all concerned.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the seperate accomodation at the rear of the pub, or bring some earplugs!

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. We are pleased to hear that you have stayed with us before. Thank you for bringing the noise issue to our attention. We are so please to hear that you would look to stay with us again and as a gesture for your regular custom and understanding we would like to offer you a discount on your next stay with us and will make sure we do everything we can to put you in a ground floor room in the cottage. Its an above the average hotel on the top of a pub. You are close to the centre and the price is not to high. Of course you have shared bathroom, but in total it is totally okay as a stay in Portsmouth.

Booked in on-line at the last minute as we needed somewhere to stay and we were not disappointed. The location was within easy walking distance of all of the main areas to visit. The price was a lot less than the nearest competitor and more than made up for the short walk to get a breakfast at a lovely place where we got a discount for staying where we were. Staff there could not have been more helpful, polite and friendly. The bed was firm but comfortable and the room was very clean. Portsmouth is on our list of places to visit again and this will be the first place I contact for somewhere to stay.
