when we arrived at Etap Hotel Portsmouth the first thing that struck us was the size of the car park! there are about 12 spaces for a hotel of about 60 rooms!
We parked up in the only available place and went in at 12:00 as we were told we could check-in, it was the speediest check-in i had ever experienced in any hotel - well done Etap, now for the rest of the stay!
when we got to our room (room 23, ground floor) we opened the door and the immediate smell of smoke over powered us (considering this is a completely non-smoking hotel, not a good start) so i went to open the window to air the room but to my surprise it was already open and the safety device to stop the window being open more than a few centimetres had been broken allowing the widow to swing freely like a kid in a play park!
After putting our bags down, we noticed another smell! this time it was eminating from the sink and was a disgusting eggy stench but, we decided to leave it (and hope that it would go) and go out to grab some lunch.
When we returned, some 45 minutes later, we were once again met with a stench at our door but, this time it was a gutwrenching, gag inducing, eggy overhaul! I immediately shut the door and returned to the front desk to explain and we were straight away changed room (1st floor, number 108), which when we got to it smelt so fresh it was hard to believe we were in the same building, the room was the same layout but everything was clean, fresh and working correctly!
Everything was then fine about our stay until the following morning when at 10:20am, whilst we were relaxing and watching sunday morning tv, a knock came on the door, i went to answer it and was met with a cleaner trying to get in my room with her 'all room unlocking keycard' she said 'I'm here to clean your room' to which i replied 'we dont have to check-out until 12:00 and we're not ready to leave yet' which was met with a loud tut and a shout down the hall of '108's not ready yet!' in her most sarcastic of tones!
One thing i will say about this hotel is that it is in prime position for what we needed it for and that is going to Fratton park, for the football, i would not advise anyone other than football fans (home or away) booking in here on a matchday!
The rooms, although they look like jail cells, are adequate enough for one night stays and you get what you pay for with regards to ameinities!
