I decided to stop here on my way to the Isle of Wight. I travelled by train, from Darlington, after finishing work at 4pm and caught the catamaran ferry on the following morning. The modern hotel is walking distance from Fratton station.
The room was minimalist and devoid of character. It's at the other end of the spectrum from those cluttered, flowery guest houses we have all stayed in. It was clean and functional; everything worked. It was fairly quiet and from the window I had a view of Fratton Park, home of Portsmouth FC. It think it would bee a good hotel for a fan going to a midweek match, when it would be difficult to get back home.
The main negative was the lack of tea and coffee in the room, which is unusual. I went to the vending/cafe area on the ground floor, which was ok, but not cheap. Breakfast, at a fiver, was a decent continental and worth the money.

In fact we had stayed overnight from July 22, 2013. We arrived from Cherbourg (France) and were going to London the day after taking the 12:12 train to London Victoria Station (much cheaper than to Waterloo Station). This hotel was cheaper, had an Ibis Budget standard room and there was a Subway store nearby. Breakfast was reasonable but did not meet the level of other Ibis Hotels. If you are going to stay overnight in Portsmouth this is a good option, although not in downtown.

The hotel is situated right next to Portsmouth Football ground so its perfect for those away fans to stay in.
We used the bus to get in to Portsmouth (we were warned about the very expensive parking!) and Southsea. Remember to ask about dayrider tickets as the drivers didn't seem to want to help you get the best deal on the buses!
We parked our car in the B&Q car park opposite the hotel the first night and reception gave us a ticket to put in the car to ensure we weren't clamped. We were then able to move it in to the hotel car park once people had checked out the following day.
The room is small and compact but as expected from the description on their website.
The shower in the room is a little odd and we had to keep asking for a third towel in the room as we were only left two for a room with three people but it was clean and tidy which was good for us.
The reception staff were helpful but they seemed to be out in the back office more than on the desk when we were there.
The wifi was free but did seem to be weak even though we were only on the third floor.
We had breakfast one morning as we had stayed in other Ibis Budget hotels and there didnt seem to be as much choice at this hotel but still enough to choose from for £4.95.
We chose to stay here based on the cost of other hotels in Portsmouth being much more expensive and we would stay here again. As long as you go expecting basic you wont be disappointed.

Exactly what I expected from this budget hotel the room was tiny with nothing in it other than the bed and TV the shower room was a plastic cubicle in the corner the toilet also cubicle next to it that said it was absolutely fine for one night stopover we were only here for an evening function so only spent a couple of hours in the room anyway the room was very tidy and no complaints over that the bed was absolutely rock solid. We were in room 121 ,the view from the window was a brick wall about 4 foot away but we didn't book it for the view so that was fine also if you are on a shoestring budget (we paid £59) and want somewhere clean to stay then I would recommend this hotel nothing fancy but it does what it says on the label

The hotel is at a good location, 15 mins walk from the beach.
Lots of food courts nearby, train station was only 10 mins walk away.
Friendly staff , only thing I missed in room was the fridge and toiletry and no room service.
But overall worth what we paid for.

I must confess that we picked the IBis on the basis of price rather than any other reason: our usual choice of Premier was just a bit too pricey on this particular night last week. We have used Ibis before but we found this one barely acceptable. The room was very small and uncomfortably hot and the shower room - a glorified cupboard. With a late arrival off the ferry and an early start I was grateful we only spent 9 hours in this hotel.
